it hit me hard…

The little receipt-like thing the machine spat out…i don’t even know where it is.

my wife noticed my mood was glum.

“What’s eating you, Jim?” she asked.

“Ahh…it’s nothing i’m just a little worried about the machine,” i replied.

It’s been about 3 weeks since we used the machine…3 weeks since we both decided it was time to turn our lives around.

What had me so worried, you wonder.

She said, “Jim, it gives you a mini health report. You wanna try it?”

For about a year and a half, my health has been on a serious decline. I’m sure i’ve mentioned this to you–but it isn’t just me…my wife’s been complaining of various pains too.

I think the main issues was this…

We weren’t getting enough sleep. The strains of having a new baby (now 16 months old) who is far more energetic than both of us combined…

My productivity was down…

My energy levels were shot…

And every part of my body hurt!

It hit an all time “crazy” when we went to bed one day at 10am (after having spent the entire night awake)…and Adam, our little boy, once more, refused to sleep for a whole ‘nother hour.

This is a baby, you get me? And he’s staying up all night, not sleeping till 11 in the morning! It can’t be good for him and it definitely was no good for us.

The fated kiosk reflected this when we used it.

My blood pressure was reported a little over the “normal” range.

Not enough to be a problem…

But it was one area i didn’t expect to have problems.

Fat ratio was ridiculously high. and of course i’ve slowly but surely “put on a few” in sympathy weight during the wife’s pregnancy.

Anyway, so that day, we resolved to make some changes in our lifestyle.

Before i go further…i’ll explain why this is even relevant to you.

Often times, in this business, people are in a huge rush. I mean the message i sent out a couple days ago was certainly not a popular one and i knew that before i sent it.

But in my experience, the ONLY way to conquer any big challenge…no matter how huge, no matter how scary…

Is one piece at a time.

Say you want to own your own home…that 30k deposit seems absolutely impossible when your entire income is 2,000/mo.

For many people, owning a home is just a dream.

They’ll say “Hey i’ll wait till i get a better job” and they may wait for years and years.

Similarly, in business, your dreams for where you want it to go don’t come easy.

But if you want to reach your income goal you have to start somewhere. You’ve got to break it into small bite-sized, easily conquerable pieces, and then work toward it.

Buying a house?

Any way you look at it, on a 2k salary, it’s gonna seem pointless to try.

Say you set aside $200/month (10% of your earnings)…it’s still going to take 12 and a half years JUST to get the deposit together.

But guess what?

You may have spent the 12.5 years waiting for the perfect job or income opportunity to come around…and still be no further ahead.

More interestingly, however, is that when you are working toward a goal, you somehow start to automatically work more efficiently..you get more creative and your actions have better impact.

Before long, you probably WILL land that dream job or lucrative business that brings you toward your goal faster.

Let me tell you what happened over the past 3 weeks, so you see what i mean…

First, we agreed to start sleeping at 8.30pm. Put our little boy to bed at 6.30pm so we’d have 2 hours of peace and quiet…and wake up at sunrise.

This was an easy fix. For two days we stayed awake as long as we could (including Adam!), until we were dog tired by 5pm. We now sleep at 8.30 and wake up at 4.30. Fully rested after 8 hours sleep–something we never dreamed of having before.

The kid sleeps more soundly and his mood is generally better during the day, making it easier on us.

By 2pm, our new lunch time, i’ve had a 10 hour work day–often completing work on 3 different tasks instead of the one i used to be able to do.

We regulated our eating patterns too…

two real meals a day, breakfast and lunch. Focus on vegetables and fruit. Not a big deal, i enjoy veg more than meat anyway. But it was a matter of introducing variety more than anything and our food has been more interesting in general.

And i resolved to do just 10 push-ups, 5 times a day for a total of 50 per day.

No major muscle building intended there. I just wanted to strengthen my back for a better work posture.

Three weeks later, i’m about 5kg lighter (11 pounds).

I am more creative, more productive, more energetic…

I take my boy out to the park in the morning. I spend time with the family after lunch and we’re all generally in better moods.

Best part, my back barely hurts any more!

Now you may scoff at losing 200 grams of weight per day…or 50 push ups.

But you know what?

It FEELS easy and yet i get steadily lighter and healthier.

And it’s easier to stick to this routine for life than to do some crash diet and exercise that leaves you totally starving and unhappy for a week before you give up anyway.

My point?

In your business, you’ve probably been going about it all wrong.

You’re racing toward some imaginary deadline with the debt collectors right on your tail…

But for all your painful efforts, there’s little to show for it. And you quickly give up and regularly change direction, backtracking on any progress you do make.

I’ve had clients come to me prepared to spend 10,000 dollars on traffic…only to ask to pause the campaign within a couple of weeks because they couldn’t afford to keep it up.

All i ever ask my clients to do is commit whatever amount they think they can afford to commit for 6-12 months straight, rain or shine. It doesn’t matter to me, if it’s $5/day or $500. What matters is that it is consistent.

This is the secret to success…

Consistent, bite-sized forward progress.

Not giant “EFF YOU” bursts of motivation and drive, short-lived and impossible to keep up.

By the end, you’ve built this giant purring Super Traffic Machine that pumps out sales and commissions…and you had a lot of fun building it…and it didn’t even feel hard.

You look over your accomplishment and remember how you conquered this big animal called “traffic” and you win.

That’s the power of consistency.

That’s the power of small bite sized forward progress.

Your funnel don’t convert

Heya–arguing is futile when people say, “I already have a funnel that’s converting”.

Let me take a few minutes of your time to knock a giant hole in this statement.

Students say this to me, inevitably, to get me to say it’s ok to skip straight to traffic instead of doing the proper planning and preparation for it. Therein lies the biggest clue their statement is false. They do NOT have a funnel that’s converting.

Here’s what I mean…

Yesterday I received a commission notification for an affiliate product I have literally not promoted in over 6 years.

That business had gone through many iterations, changed their branding and their products many times over in the 6 years that passed. Yet, i still get commissions till today.

When I was actively promoting their products, I did absolutely NOTHING but send traffic. And I sent it raw, right to their optin page, no customization, preselling, or anything else. (This is not something I’d recommend for affiliates. In my case I was a hired traffic manager and the client was paying the advertising bill, not me. Any traffic i drove, they owned.).

My point is, their funnel was an actual “converting funnel”.

I still earn commissions from it, six years after I stopped promoting it.

Here’s even more proof this funnel was indeed a converting funnel.

Every time I spoke to my client, and no matter how much traffic I was already driving, they demanded more. All they wanted was scale. They didn’t care what it cost or how big their Adwords bill was at the end of the month. They knew that as long as traffic flowed to their page, their funnel would make money from it.

They did not hire me to use any of my special traffic cost-dropping tactics.

They did not hire me to use any voodoo ad targeting techniques.

All they wanted me to do was drive a buttload of CLICKS to their site.

Now compare this to the average guy or girl buying up traffic courses and tools, trying to learn voodoo traffic tricks.

Are they this confident in their funnel’s ability to convert?

Don’t answer that. Tell you what–

Over the years I’ve worked with a lot of affiliate system owners, and as much as they would like you to think their funnels convert like gangbusters, they don’t.

Inevitably, they don’t hire me to scale out their operation.

They hire me to minimize their traffic costs.

They hire me to get them cheap leads.

They hire me to get them profitable sales.

Keep in mind, these are probably guys who are richer than you, who make more money, and have a more complete funnel than you do. Yet they’re scared poopless to scale.

The reason?

No body desperately wants what they got!

If they had something so valuable to offer visitors, they not only would have no need for any voodoo traffic tricks to have lower costs–they wouldn’t even need any special sales skills either! Buyers don’t resist when you have something they want.

Plus, when you focus on cost-dropping, you’re also reducing traffic and scale.

And this is why, if you think you have a high converting funnel and you’re reading this message, I already know you do NOT have a high converting funnel.

You also don’t have an offer or product people desperately want.

If you did, you wouldn’t be trying to learn traffic. You’d be running some TERRIBLE ad campaign that’s converting like gangbusters anyway. You might even be hiring me to scale it out for you. And when I ask you what your budget is, you’d say, “Money is not an issue, get me as much traffic as you can.”

What you will not be doing is sitting around on my list waiting for me to sell yet another traffic product or share some golden traffic nugget.

Chances are you’re not in that position today.

The legitimate case FOR non-Relevance

When
someone calls me a “good copywriter”. Especially since I’ve never written a
conventional sales letter or taken a copywriting course in my life.

Truth is, selling
doesn’t need copywriting, or hype, or NLP, or psycho-sales tactics.

I’m living, breathing proof.

To sell
stuff, you need straight-forward, efficient communication. It doesn’t have
to be good if you can get across this one little thing.

But first, hear this story…

My first
Android Tablet was a Samsung Galaxy Note.

It was a
gift from my little brother. And I was filled with a sense of excitement I haven’t
felt since I was a kid pulling apart my first Gateway PC before I even turned it on.

The tablet
was a thrilling new toy I wanted to use for everything.

In true NERD-style…

Within the
first 24 hours of owning the thing, I wanted to program it.

Problem?

I had no
idea how to make a Mobile App.

But that didn’t
stop me.

It wasn’t
long before I learned how to build an App and posted it to the Google Play and iTunes stores.

Even
though it never become ESPECIALLY popular, it had a good few thousand
downloads, and it led me to a pretty important discovery in my main business.

See, i wanted
to make use of my App building experience to make money.

So I came
up with this RIDICULOUS idea. It was
absolutely nuts and would probably FLOP…but i’ve always been adventurous in my
marketing, so I decided to give it a whirl.

I wanted to create a Mobile programming class and offer it to my Internet Marketing
subscriber base.

Crazy right?

The sales
page was ugly and rushed.

The
headline simply said, “Build Your Own Mobile App”. No subhead. No hype. No build up. No mystery.

It was as
plane jane as a headline can get.

The entire
sales pitch was 7 paragraphs. I’ve even taken a
screenshot which you’ll find at the link further down.

I sent that page to a small house-list of about
3,000 INTERNET MARKETING subscribers.

Think about
this…Who were these people?

People like
you.

Internet
marketers who responded to one of my Google Ads promising traffic advice.

Programming
was not their primary pain…not even their secondary pain. They wanted TRAFFIC!

So for all
intents and purposes, the offer was sent to an “untargeted” list of people who
were NOT looking for and NOT buying programming information.

They had
previously never shown any interest in a similar offer and if you asked them back
then, they would have told you so. Actually, many are so
computer-illiterate that they would run in the other direction if god forbid, I
happened to get a little technical in an email.

So what
happened?

That ugly as
fugk page… ended up selling 50 seats.

Way MORE
than I ever imagined it would.

With
upsells, I was able to make a decent chunk of change from that VERY small list of
untargeted prospects, selling them a very irrelevant product.

But what’s the
point of this experiment?

Break every
holy rule of copywriting and sales?

No.

It was
proof that people don’t buy what they NEED.

They buy
what they WANT. And if you’re clever, you can make anyone want anything.

A LOADED
claim right there!

Apple believed
in this principle enough to invest into producing the first iPhone. Listen,
this was THE MOST EXPENSIVE phone ever sold at the time.

Nobody knew
they needed a computer in their pocket until Apple showed you how useful and
fun it would be to have one.

Notice…

Apple has never sold the iPhone with a long-form sales letter. They simply show you the product and tell you what you might want to use it for. People get
excited.

Today, the
iPhone is sold worldwide to people from all walks of life.
Whether or not they can afford it.

In fact, if you’re on a contract, you’re
basically borrowing money to afford it.

Imagine having
a message….

…so dang POWERFUL… that people will borrow to afford your products…even
when they don’t need them!

And imagine
not needing to use a single copywriting trick to have that kind of influence.

Crazy, I tell
ya.

Apple got
that.

And they’re
not the only ones.

PPC
Domination, was my first internet marketing training course. It was sold by Mike Dillard
withOUT a sales letter. Just an order form.

It sold 500
units in its “beta test” wave. Another 3,000 units in its official launch
(which coincidentally did have a proper sales letter written).

Similarly,
another “irrelevant” course I released shortly after the Mobile App class… was
called 90 Minute HTML… remember that?

It taught the programming language of webpages to Internet Marketers.

We did even better with that class than the Mobile App one.

Bottom line
is…

You do NOT
need to master copywriting to sell your products.

People buy
products they think would be useful, exciting, or fun. Even if they don’t need
them. Even if they can’t afford them.

Your job is to communicate that with them.

You don’t do it with magical words…words
may even hurt the sale.

No. It’s
something else.

You’ll

I Spy, You Spy

Phew…

It’s been a while, eh?

You might be one of many who wrote to me wondering if i’d removed them from my newsletter or something.

I didn’t.

What’s been happening though is…well… raising a baby is full of pleasant…and sometimes not so pleasant distractions that end up with you in the emergency room on 4 different occasions in two months.

But that’s not what’s been keeping me from you!

I’ve been working on something really special for you which i just finished today. There’s still some “clean up” to be done, but it’s more or less finished.

And i’m not opening it up right away, because it’s a software tool that needs to be “stress tested” before it’s production ready.

But there’s an opportunity for a few of you to get in on the test.

Here’s the gist of what my tool does.

It’s a website surveillance camera.

I’ve been using it at my own website for a little while to quite literally (and secretly) watch you and other users while you’re browsing important pages on my site, like sales letters, mini-series, blog posts, and lead capture pages.

The idea came to me a long time ago actually..

i mean i drive traffic to all kinds of landing pages and sometimes, even after years of doing traffic, you get your landing page converting at 20% and you’re happy…but then you wonder what happened with the other 8000 visitors who didn’t optin or didn’t buy?

And sure there are plenty of tools like Google Analytics, Crazyegg, clicktale, etc, that try to give you some insight into what’s going on…

but their data is too delayed, too summarised, often inaccurate (as i recently discovered), and very very STATIC.

Sometimes you want to know “What went wrong?”…not just “What went better than what”

So a couple of months ago, i had two different clients i was driving traffic for…

One whose landing page refused to convert a single lead, even after 10 or more landing page variations and two different offers were tested.

The other, whose landing page was sporadically converting ..and i think the conversion average rate was around the 2% mark.

Frustrated, i decided to go ahead and write a tool that does exactly what i want…

Show me a real-time screencast of what happens when visitors visit.

I think it took me a few hours to get a barebones version going.

That day, i watched each user session as it came in. And i saw some very interesting things.

Like, people reading the privacy message just before clicking the submit button on the optin box.

And you can tell they’re reading because they actually move their mouse like a child would use its finger to read.

I watched people stumble over silly things, for example, clicking frantically on the headline at the top of the page, and leaving in frustration without ever realising there was more if they’d just scroll.

Every time i saw something confusing or stumbling my visitors, i immediately fixed it.

By the end of that day, both pages were converting pretty well.

But i didn’t know how well until the next day, when i hit a CONSISTENT 46% optin-rate. A 2,300% boost in conversion with just a few simple tweaks.

Tweaks i would have never thought to make had i not seen with my own eyes what was going on.

that’s just ONE of the many things this tool does.

It also lets you monitor attentiveness and understand which parts of your page are getting skipped and which are being read.

It lets you record sessions and play them back later…or monitor them live as they come in.

And it’s insanely accurate.

I’m quite proud of it.

Serious talk

Alright,
let’s talk.

There’s many problems with the home based entrepreneur. But the worst, by far, is his
laziness and total obliviousness to reality.

Here’s what
I mean…

The other
day I was talking with a coaching client who said something I’ve heard
countless times from many students.

“I think this audience just want a Home
Business opportunity that’s real”.

So I had to
ask:

“What is REAL to you? What is legit?”

The student
was taken by surprise and could not answer.

See, what is real
is not very sellable.

Like if
anyone tells you that you can build a worthwhile income online without learning
any skills, they’re LYING.

Or that you
can do it without spending any money… they’re LYING.

Or that you
can do it without working hard… they’re LYING.

But can you
imagine anyone selling a damn thing if they told you that you can make little
to no money, for up to 5 years….and you’ll have to spend a small fortune…and
spend every waking minute working on your business…

And then
maybe, if you’re lucky, you might start having a trickle of income?

Do you think
anyone can sell that to you?

No.

But that’s what’s
real.

What’s
interesting though, is that one can make the time, effort, and financial
investment “smaller”.

The
problem we have is that if you go online and start looking for ways to make
money from the internet, you’re going to be presented with a variety of “opportunities”
that all boil down to some type of affiliate marketing.

Taking
someone else’s existing product or sales process…

And sending
traffic into it.

This is
REALLY FUGKING BORING.

I mean,
half the time it’s a product you couldn’t care less about. Certainly nothing
that gets you excited…

And even if
it did get you excited, it’s not exactly the most gratifying kind of work to “just
drive traffic into it”.

The only
thing that would be more fun is DYING.

And let me tell you something else…

If by now
you haven’t found a BizOp or system that’s making you gangs of money in your underpants, then it’s
very unlikely that’s ever going to happen for you.

If I were
you and had no interest in gaining any new skills, investing any money, or in
working very hard with very little financial reward…

I’d throw
in the towel.

Give up
already.

Cut your
losses. Chalk it up as a fail and get on with your life.

There’s no
point sitting on pause while you wait for that big opportunity to finally land
in your lap and make you gazillions of dollars.

Sound
scary?

Yeah. I
know.

So what’s
the alternative if you’re not ready to give up?

Stop
looking for online BizOps and affiliate systems and start building an idea of
your own.

Look at the
areas you already have skills and knowledge in, and build a business around that
knowledge. The internet is filled with tools and websites that can help you
monetize ANY skill you have.

Like for
example, there’s Google Helpouts.

A friend of
mine is great with guitar…he got excited when I showed him the site, because he ealised he could teach guitar live and charge a per minute rate for
training.

There’s

eLance, and Fiverr for freelancers to monetize just about any skills.

The other
day, I got an email from Fiverr showcasing a girl who had done 10 THOUSAND “voice over” gigs
to date.

Freaking VOICE OVER is a job people pay for online. Her work on Fiverr ended up getting her radio and acting gigs.

And don’t snub your nose at Fiverr–there’s a LOT of money to be made
there.

My point
is, the internet isn’t JUST affiliate programs and traffic. There’s much more
fun and far more lucrative ways to make money from home.

Not all of
them have to be leveraged, make money in your sleep type of deals.

Some people
got no problem trading hours for dollars–especially if they can do it from the comfort of
their home and choose their hours.

If you’re clever and do quality work, you’d build up a
reputation quickly and soon be able to hire your own employees or turn your idea into an incredibly lucrative business or franchise.

There’s so
many kinds of businesses you can run online too…

Audio Transcription,
research, writing, social media management, affiliate management, website
development, virtual assistants, voice overs, modelling…

The list
goes on.

There’s
something out there to suit EVERYONE’s tastes. If you’d look instead of
chasing these fruitless, BORING affiliate opportunities.

So i hope you’ll take this advice seriously and go seek new legitimate opportunity online.

Today it’s raining cats and dogs but it’s warm…and here’s what this has
to do with you:

See, most
web business enthusiasts think merely having a home business will give freedom. It doesn’t.

Chances are
if you’re reading this, you have an online business. Yet you don’t really enjoy
the kind of freedom I’m talking about.

Here’s what
I mean…

At 3.00am
this morning, we finally put our Hospital Bag in the car.

It was
pouring rain and Aya wanted to go out for a drive.

Now, the
past couple of weeks, I’ve been taking extra precautions. Like making sure my
phone is NEVER silent… Leaving the bedroom door open at all times. Making sure
Aya has cash with which to pay a cab if necessary… Avoiding going out alone…

Little
things.

Probably
because of this, I’ve started having weird dreams with a recurring theme. A
kind of unspoken, subconscious fear has been brought to light.

In the last
dream, I needed to leave Aya with my parents while I raced back to the
house to grab the hospital bag…

…ultimately
missing my son’s birth!

When I returned,
in the dream, my father said to me, “Everything went smoothly, there was no
incident, Aya was a champ…and Adam was born healthy on March 31st, at 8.21 AM.”

Does it
mean anything?

I don’t
know. But truth be told, I have NOTHING to worry about.

Unlike most
expecting parents, Aya and I get to spend EVERY moment of every day together. I
have been there for her at every step of the pregnancy.

She’s been
sick the past few days, and I had the amazing privilege of making her soup and
orange juice. Laying in bed with her, through the insomnia and night terrors. Cooking for her
and taking care of her.

And she’s a
fair bit younger than I am…and it’s her first time getting pregnant…

So I took
great pleasure in telling her these calming words:

“I am here.
I’m not going anywhere. There’s nothing to fear, when the time comes I swear to
you I will be right by your side, EVERY MINUTE OF THE WAY.”

Many of our
friends have been getting pregnant lately too…

But their
experience is different.

Most of
them had to fly out their parents to take care of their wives while they go to
work.

One guy even shipped off his wife to give birth back home in war-torn Syria because he has odd work hours.

When we go
to the hospital for our routine checkups at 9.30 AM on a weekday, the waiting
room is filled with pregnant women without their husbands.

I NEVER
missed a visit.

Listen, this
isn’t just any old freedom I’m talking about here.

This is
REAL freedom.

My wife
still can’t grasp what it means to be married to a stay at home Dad who earns
better than anyone we know…

Until now,
she thinks that she’s going to be changing diapers, spending sleepless nights
in the baby room on her own, and basically raising our child by herself.

But I guarantee
you, I’m going to be typing emails to you while putting my baby to sleep.

I’m going
to be neck deep in diaper rash while taking phone meetings and giving you live
training.

This is
TRUE freedom.

Unfortunately,
most people, even those with a home business do NOT enjoy that kind of freedom.

Could you pick
ANY city in the world, one that has everything you love and few of the things

About the 2 cent traffic to your website

Why they hammer “The customer is always right”

I think it was Cesar Ritz who said,

“If a diner complains about a dish or the wine, immediately
remove it and replace it, no questions asked.”

Nice idea…

But why did he have to say this in the first place?

Why does any business have to hammer spinelessness into their staff…slogans like, “The customer is always right”?

The answer is simple…

Because the customer is RARELY EVER right. We have to work hard to affirm a lie.

The customer just happens to hold the money…and he’s spoilt for choice
on where to spend it.

Anyway, what does this have to do with YOU?

Well, you run a business. And so you will be (or already) faced with
customers and clients who THINK they hold all the power over you.

The power to punish you…if they don’t get their way.

And the power to reward you…if they feel like it.

Let me give this a little context.

Today, I discovered my Certification for Google Adwords Partners
expired and I needed to re-take Google’s exams to remain qualified. I took the
exams, didn’t study for either, and passed both with flying colours.

::bows:: Thank you. No applause, thank you!

Not that the exams are easy…in fact, they’re very hard.

See, Google’s advertising platform is powerful…

But it’s also COMPLEX. There are so many features and tools,
most of them YOU probably will never need to learn or use.

An online traffic agency, however, needs to master ALL the
tools and features so they can pick the best strategy to get traffic for clients
in any industry.

Although I’ve never needed to show anyone my Google
Certification and never advertised that I have it, my reputation and results
have spoken for themselves. My results are all I’ve needed to win clients.

But clients are not always easy to work with.

As was seen in one of the questions of Google’s “Advanced Search” exam:

I was given an example scenario where “you the advertiser” landed a BIG client with lots of money and major ad dollars…and “you” are asked how “you” would handle the client’s goals when they all pretty much CONTRADICT each other.

I’d educate them. Like i’m doing with you now.

Look, a lot of people in my shoes, would comply with
any request of the client…and the bigger the client, the more spineless the business gets.

But i often FIRED my biggest clients because what they wanted was wrong.

Reminds me of some of my students…

Many of them, because they don’t know any better, they have goals that contradict each other:

* much traffic

* low lead cost

* maximum profitability

Each of these has a trade-off.

More traffic means more cost.

Low lead cost means less traffic.

More profitability requires an increase in traffic (see above, more traffic = more cost).

A perfect example of the customer NOT being right…and why it’s our job to help them learn what they want.

Like, I’ve seen some guys get excited about acquiring 2 cent leads. They think they’re ready to teach traffic now.

But the goal of all traffic is profit.

And if you get 2 cent leads, then you won’t get many.

The minute you try to scale,
suddenly the price shoots up and you don’t know why.

It’s like a shopkeeper who finds a way to bring in a single paying customer from a 5 cent ad.

Problem is, the ad-space is cheap because, well, not too many people see their ads.

So Shopkeeper gets one customer who buys a $1 chewing gum. His maximum daily income from that ad is 0.95 cents. Fabulous.

On the other hand, a smarter shopkeeper finds a place to advertise where he gets UNLIMITED customers at $5 each…as many as he wants.

The AVERAGE sale he
makes per customer is $20.

What’s the difference?

The second Shopkeeper can get 1000 customers every day. And since his average profit is $15 per customer, he earns a total of $15,000/day.

Who would you rather be?

Me, I pick the second guy and so should you.

Focus on the big picture: Profitability.

Not lead cost. Not traffic volume. PROFITABILITY.

See, what i mean?

You teach your customer how to be right, like i am you.

And this is how my KickStart training is unique.

It’s not about how you can get traffic at the “cheapest cost”
possible.

Nor is it about how to get the “most traffic”, or the lowest
cost per acquisition…

Don’t get me wrong, these ARE priorities…but they are
secondary priorities.

Profitability comes ahead of everything in KickStart.

not only am i a great software developer nor do i only know lots of cool technical tricks, but i’m a marketer too, like you.

so i know the kind of things you’d want your mobile app to do and i’ve already built the app that demonstrates how to pull them off.

stuff like, sharing links from within your Mobile App to get viral traffic.

stuff like, how to plan, design, and get an idea for an app that will make you a nice easy stream of income every day.

stuff like, how to capture leads from within your Mobile App.

and a lot more.

But that’s not all.

according to plenty of my students, i’m a guy who has a way of making the complex simple.

i believe in simplicity as a personal philosophy, and it’s how i choose to lead life.

the thing about learning to build a Mobile App is it’s a useful skill to have.

Mobile Apps are trendy and everyone loves to download them. but rather than being just a consumer of apps like everyone else, why not add another dimension of fun to your life?

at least learn in theory how easy it is to build your own App in case you ever want to do it later.

besides, even if you don’t have an idea for an app right now, once you see how it’s done, who knows? You might actually spark up a great creative idea for an app that will help you or others.

it’s what i did actually..

that’s what started this whole thing for me.

for the longest time, i wished for apps that did this thing or that…and no one had made them already.

i have this amazing idea for a social network i’d been dying to make for almost 8 years now, but it needed a mobile camera. i was always afraid of the idea of building apps on mobile.

back in those days you had to use complex languages like Java and build them for the ugly-arse Symbian operating system which is so limiting.

i was going to hire a guy for 10,000 dollars a month to create it for me, but never got around to it.

another idea i had was for a personal need.

when i pray, i get very spiritual and concentrate very hard. but that makes me lose my place in the ritual and forget my count. Count is important in the Muslim prayer; you repeat the ritual a different number of times for each time of day.

a few months ago, i was talking with a friend and he mentioned he has the same problem.

we thought up this idea…

what if there was a mobile app that sits on top of our prayer rug…and it would just track our sequence of steps in the ritual, using the mobile camera or proximity sensor…and keep count for us!

the idea was simple yet an app didn’t exist to do it.

so recently, i figured i’d build it.

i learned how to build apps for Android first and created it in exactly ONE day.

by the next day, i had it uploaded to the Google Play store and a handful of people downloaded it and started using it.

every day, the number of users increases. and i can track them in my back office and see how many active users are using my application.

i can release updates whenever i feel like it.

but the best part is, i started building a list of subscribers for a non-profit charity project from that little app i made.

soon i published it for iPhone and increased my subscriber base. it was EASY and FUN.

next time you think, “wouldn’t it be nice if there was an app that did X”, after you attend the webinar, you’ll be able to build that app and see if anyone else thinks that’s a good idea.

seriously, screw all these reasons.

learning something new is FUN and it’s what we were put on earth to do.

to learn.

What the HECK Was you Thinking?

Funny story. this morning i woke up to an email from one of your fellow subscribers who asked:

“Jim, is the Internet Business Academy really $19.95? Are there any upsells, cross-sells, or anything else? If not, then i’m in!”

honestly, the email was kind of frustrating to answer.

first of all, the time it takes to write a careful response that both admonishes and sells is hardly worth it. seriously, i have better things to do first thing in the morning.

but that’s besides the point. Because i know that i’m probably losing about 100 more sales by NOT tackling it head-on.

after all, if one customer is asking, then there’s probably 100’s of others like him silently fearing to hit the buy button because of the same thing.

so it’s time i explained…

if you’re scared of buying a YaghiLabs product because you don’t want me to upsell you on something else during the order process, i’m worried about you.

just by being on this list, whether you’ve decided to buy the IBA or not, you’re being “upsold”.

the whole point of this email newsletter going out is to reach CUSTOMERS (not so much prospects!).

in fact, i COUNT on selling to past customers. and so should you.

if you’re just subscribed to get some “free” content and learning by watching what i’m up to, listen up and listen carefully…

the money is in selling to CUSTOMERS, not cold prospects.

acquiring a customer is ALL cost. But selling to a pre-acquired customer is all profit.

My customers are RARELY first-time buyers.

a case-in-point, you remember the 90 Minute HTML webinar i promoted a few weeks back?

well, i recognised half the names on the Paypal notifications! in fact, when creating the accounts in the members back-office, i accidentally gave them the wrong plan at first and they got the 90 Minute App webinar i sold the month before.

because of a limitation in the membership software, i got conflict issues with 90% of the customers. and quickly fixed things.

but what this told me was that more than 90% of my customers had bought a similar product before.

accidental?

hellz no! thanks btw for your repeat business if you were one of those people. i’m grateful for the trust you put in me.

but my point is, just because i’m not selling you some “One Time Offer” (OTO) right after you buy, immediately on the thank you page for your order, doesn’t mean i’m not upselling.

and if you ever hope to make any serious dough online, quit worrying about traffic and go monetize your list. i bet my first-born (who i haven’t had the time to make yet), that you haven’t tapped into 0.001% of your list’s potential.

here’s the thing though…

i don’t think this guy was so concerned about an upsell.

i think he was more concerned that this was one of those useless sales pitch products.

you know the ones you buy because of all the marketing hype, and then when you dig into it, find it’s just some long-arse sales letter disguised as content to get you buying the REAL solution for a lot more dough?

yah…i hate those too.

not my style.

the IBA is all content. training. useful, usable advice. No sales pitch.

I don’t even make money by selling some affiliate deal or whatever inside.

in fact, i think i way under-play it in all the marketing. the sales presentation is ugly and barely touches on what’s really in there.

which brings up the point, why am i selling it so darn cheap?

because it is the ONLY product in the YaghiLabs inventory that was intended to be sold to cold, first-time buyers.

it’s the only way i get the customer prospects in the first place.

the price wasn’t intended to be this low.

but i found out that people who come through the Clickbank marketplace are total internet-buying newbies. and if you don’t sell over-the-top loud hypey crap, for super-cheap they don’t buy.

so i brought down the price, little by little, until i found the price they buy at. $19.95.

It’s peanuts. i don’t even care if you buy it or don’t.

i’ve even set it up so that Clickbank randomly give out 75% commission to any affiliate who has previously promoted it. don’t be surprised if you’ve promoted it once and got a commission.

don’t even pat yourself on the back, because i probably just gave it to you.

so i make about $4 per sale, after affiliates and clickbank have been paid.

why would i even bother?

because i’m too busy to do anything about getting more money from it.

and because our revenue comes almost entirely from past customers.

but hey, i’m writing this email for a “sinister” reason too haha.

people on my mailing list aren’t internet newbies. they’re used to paying good money for quality education. so when they see one of my products priced so LOW, they’re kinda shocked.

their immediate assumption is that it can’t be a good product. it probably sucks. it’s probably some thrown together piece of crap.

it’s not.

i spent 3 months writing it.

in fact, i’ve had emails from several well-paid copywriters who bought it saying, “DUDE WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING? $19.95? This product is worth at least a few hundred if not more.”

i agree.

but refer to what i said earlier. not enough time!

i’m working on so many projects, and i’m happy to leave the IBA on clickbank for anyone who has voodoo powers to see the value inside it.

Why Do PPC Campaigns Die

Because things can change fast, and if you’re not showing up to react to the changes, or progressively stay in front of change, you lose. Game over. Go home. The PPC campaign dies.

So you should be evaluating your PPC campaigns on a regular basis. This is the only way to stay ahead of a constantly changing market. The moment you stop managing your PPC campaigns is the moment they die.

Here are just a few quick tips to prevent your PPC campaigns from completely dying out, but by all means not an exhaustive list.

Know your metrics

This is most important, so I’ll write it first…

Figure out how much it costs to acquire a customer. Then make sure you aren’t spending more to obtain a customer on clicks that what you’ll earn as a result of acquiring the customer. Common sense really.

You’ll see a helpful list below this point here, but suffice to say, if you are paying more than you make, your campaign will be donezo!

Keep abreast of new features

The Google Adwords platform has dramatically changed over the years. Microsoft adCenter has made a comprehensive round of recent changes.

Take advantage of change. Evaluate your campaigns using the tools that the engine provides.

Always be evaluating

Pay attention to the obvious i.e. click-through rates and conversions. Study the not-so-obvious i.e. the copy that most appeals to your audience. Then, amplifly the positive. Eliminate the negative.

Study your competition

The more time you spend and deeper you go with competitive intelligence, the more questions you’ll develop. Before long, you’ll start to make predictions about your competitors’ behavior. This will lead to your own campaign adjustments.

Crazy or Evil Business Genius?

When Andrew Reitano had enough of high definition technology, he decided to kick it old school and make a home-made video game.

If you were around in the 80’s, you might remember what an 8-bit game looked like. I missed that boat. So the closest I came to it was the Nintendo 64, which was a little more sophisticated.

The Nintendo 64 was, and is to this day, my favourite console. I liked one racecourse game, where I whizzed through trippy rainbow levels with eyes unblinking, panting, and forehead damp with perspiration, kicking ass….

*fwhit!*

…Shit! The game freezes. I rip out the cartridge, blow in it a few times, shake it up and down, do the hokie pokie, turn around, and resume the game, and I’m back!

Okay, maybe the Nintendo 64 wasn’t that great.

But Andrew Reitano (aka Batsly Adams) might disagree, because his game idea just might have come to him while piss-drunk and blowing into the cartridge of a frozen game.

Reitano’s video game consists of a gutted cartridge from an 80’s Nintendo (NES) loaded with a breathalyser. He’s an engineer, by the way, which may explain why this all made sense to him. The breathaliser-cartridge contraption attaches to a television through some electronics and the whole setup makes up a college drinking video game.

Between rounds of shots, Players take turns blowing into the breathaliser-cartridge.

The player’s blood-alcohol level is measured and their drunkenness is rated using clever puns displayed on the attached television in whopping 8-bit color.

The game, named appropriately, The DrunkenNES, comes complete with a Hall of Fame so players can see and beat one another’s records.

I don’t know about you, but I come from a college time of beer-pong. Very traditional, very effective, and no technology involved. Unless you play with cell-phones instead of ping pong balls, but then the rules change and that’s a whole other story.

It might be fun to imagine what today’s college kids would do with The DrunkenNES—Wait. No.

Let me back up a little bit. I’m not even sure if breathalysers are legal devices that are available to any commoner. Could Joe Blow just walk into the supermarket and say,

“Hey. Uh, yeah. Where do you guys keep the breathalysers?”

and would the meat-packer respond, “Oh, just down there, in aisle 3, next to the cookies.” ???

It doesn’t seem likely.

But anyway, for fun, let’s assume Batsly does find the breathalisers in Aisle 3 and he creates a prototype of The DrunkenNES using his Engineering education. My prediction is that he would become extremely rich and destroy humanity in one shot.

After all, people play games to win and no one wants to lose DrunkenNES.

I mean, all that good ole’ Batsly would have to do is post a few videos on YouTube and pretty soon…

Internet creatures will start responding, liking, and thumbs-upping…

Batsly will think to himself, “Hm. Maybe I can be rich and famous if I sell this shit for real.”

He gets in touch with his dad’s lawyer and patents the idea. Soon he has Hasbro and Mattel on the phone.

“Hello, Hasbro? Mattel? I got this gajillion dollar game idea. Make it real!”

College kids worldwide start buying DrunkenNES after DrunkenNES, little boys and girls will put the DrunkenNES on their Christmas list to Santa, teenagers will be sneaking them into school, every dorm room on the planet will have at least one.

Drinking epidemic.

The trend will spread across the civilised world, eventually taking everyone on a deathly trip in the ever-downward spiral of alcoholism. And then? No more college kids! That means no more future leaders of tomorrow!

Oh, this DrunkenNES is a bad idea, I tell you. A bad fucking idea.

There’s a silver lining, or a golden spoon, or how does that expression go? When there’s a moral to a story?

Anyway, there’s a moral:

If you come up with a business idea that’s unique and original, you have a good chance of killing off all idiots and ruling the world.

Basma on Affiliate Marketing Troubles with ClickBank and PPC

Over the past few months, Jim’s been showing me the ropes with PPC advertising to help me promote affiliate products from Clickbank. I was asked to share with you my journey here. And hopefully I can either inspire you or teach you what works and what doesn’t in affiliate marketing.

For the past 10 years, I’ve been teaching at the college of chemical engineering in one of the Arabian Gulf countries. Until my son came from Australia to visit me in April of 2008, I had never heard of affiliate marketing.

He used some jargon that with time I started to understand. At first, I took an interest in what he was doing only because I wanted to make sure my son is doing something that was worth having sacrificed his PhD education for.

During his visit I noticed he was busy all the time; writing articles, writing a book, taping videos, doing interviews etc. He was good at what he was doing and financially he was doing really well.  

Because I was working in a foreign country, I was not entitled to any retirement plans. So when my contract finished I would have to leave the job and the country and start fresh elsewhere. But as you grow older your opportunities of getting a job are reduced.  Jim and I were talking about this issue and he suggested that I leave my job and do internet marketing to have financial security at my old age. I laughed and said I can’t do what you are doing. He said of course you can, you were able to have a PhD. If you put your mind to it you will do it. I said why bother, I am 48 and too old to try and learn new things.

He asked, “Mum, what if I tell you, you can start doing affiliate marketing without having to do the amount of work I am doing?”

He got my attention. Late last year, I left my job. Jim passed onto me a link to listen to an interview with an affiliate marketer who was doing click bank and CPA offers without a website using PPC only. The guy was making a fortune with this. It sounded a lot easier than what Jim is doing. So I decided to give internet marketing a go.

Being an academic, I spent at least two months educating myself about mind set, internet marketing, PPC, SEO, web sites, key word research, copy writing, how to write effective ads, building a mailing list etc etc. Every time Jim called me to check how I was doing I tell him I am still reading. He must have gotten fed up with me. He told me this theoretical stuff is good but will not do you much good until you create a campaign and start advertising and leaning from your mistakes. 

Jim was writing PPC Domination at the time and he sent me the material as he wrote it. I studied his course and gave him feedback. Eventually, I thought I was ready to start promoting an offer.

My biggest problem was what to promote and how to choose the offer. I spent almost a month studying the criteria for selecting an offer. 

Why did it take me this long? 

Because I read a lot. Yet, the more I read the more confused I got and the more distracted I became. Different super affiliates teach you different criteria for selecting an offer and in most cases they are contradicting. I was so confused and extremely frustrated. I kept telling myself what have I got myself into? I better not waste more time, I should quit now this is not for me. 

Jim pushed me to keep at it. He said all marketers went through what you are going through and worse. I told him I can’t decide what to promote. He said it does not matter what you choose. I said what if it does not work? “Who cares?” he said. “I KNOW whatever you choose will not work straight anyway, you have to tweak your ads, test your keywords, there is a lot of work for you to do. I thought that was not very helpful neither comforting. Was it?

I finally chose an offer from click bank. What a relief! 

Then I had to do keyword research which I had no problem with, in theory. But then I had to decide how much to bid. Most marketers suggest to bid small amounts–like 20 cents and set $25 for your daily budget. But they do not tell you what to do next if you face a problem. They assume your campaign will be successful straight away. So I bid 20 cents and I waited a day but I only had a few impressions. I did not know what to do, so I went to the internet to find the answer to how to increase my impressions.

The material I found was about how to improve click through rate and how to increase conversion. Why no one is talking about impressions. How come they do not have a problem? I was so frustrated and honestly I spent days trying to find what to do to increase my impressions. Jim travels a lot, and at the time he was in the States. Because of the time zone difference, I did not see him online for many days at a time. In addition to that I did not want him to think that whenever I face a problem I ask him instead of finding the answer on my own.

Unfortunately, at the end I had to go back to him. The first thing he asked was, “What are you bidding and what is your daily budget?”

When I told him that I bid20 cents with a daily budget of $25, he was surprised.  He said no wonder why you are not getting impressions. Raise your bid to $1 and your budget to $500 and monitor your campaign closely.

I thought that is a lot to bid especially for an offer where you get paid $17 in commission per sale and the expected conversion rate is 1%. This means I will have to pay $100 to get $17. And I did NOT want to spend $500 a day. He said if you can get $500  dollars worth of clicks at this stage you will be lucky but do not worry you won’t use it all up. A high budget gets Google to display your ads more often. And if you establish a good click though rate your cost per click will drop and you won’t have to pay $1. 

Hesitantly, I increased my bid and daily budget. I did not sleep that night. I stayed by the computer.

Holy! My impressions started to soar. I paid $0.95 per click but I did not get many clicks. Jim said, “That’s GREAT NEWS. Focus on the positive. You now have impressions. After this you can start tweaking your ad to increase the number of times it gets clicked.” 

I spent around $20 dollars on the offer before I began having problems. As I found out, later, it was because I was direct linking. Straight to the merchant’s landing page.

Over the past few months I tried promoting 16 CPA and Click bank offers by direct linking. I made enough money to cover most of my advertising costs–which was nice. But I faced two problems with direct linking: expensive clicks, and the bidding war I had to get into because of sharing the same URL with much more experienced marketers. 

Eventually, my ads did not show often and conversions were very occasional.

I looked for a solution. Super affiliates suggest a “framing” or “masking” strategy for those who use direct linking. So, I bought a domain from GoDaddy for one offer and tried masking it. As a result my cost per click dropped, my quality score was good, and Google got off my case about the shared URL.  

According to a newly launched product on Clickbank marketing, if you are direct linking you can use domain masking.  Jim told me that Google does not allow masking and it will flag those who use it. 

So my easy options were gone.  

I still want to do direct linking especially if I want to test an offer. I do not want to waste my time creating a landing page for it before I am sure it is profitable. Direct linking is being promoted by big marketers and just last month I bought a product from Clickbank. I kept telling myself if they are able to do then it can be done. This time I tried direct linking on the content network. I had initial success, but my clicks cost around 71 cents when other people were paying 3 cents for similar offers.

Even with this high cost, I stopped having impressions.  I contacted Google support and was told to increase my bid, increase my budget and/or increase the number of countries in which my ads would show. None of this got me impressions. So I contacted Google support again, and explained to them that I did everything they asked me to do but my ads are still not running. They told me there is nothing technical to stop my ads from being syndicated on the content but they will check with their supervisors!

Finally, after 14 e-mails of communication between me and Google support the answer came; they said that they do not allow health and fitness offers on the content network.

The thing is, I was promoting other offers that had nothing to do with health and fitness and these were stopped too. Jim told me it looks like your account is flagged. Google did not tell me they flagged my account. I ran the same campaigns on the search engine and I got impressions but I still had the same problems related to direct linking.

I was puzzled because Google did not tell me my account is flagged and I see fitness ads on the content network, so why are mine not allowed?  Jim then ran one of my offers on content network using one of his own accounts…and guess what? He got impressions. So we concluded that Google is not happy with my account but we are not sure why. 

I tried advertising on Yahoo. I had no problem with direct linking but Yahoo traffic is very little. I would get 1 click a day per ad group and sometimes 1 click/ a day per campaign. I had so many ad groups per campaign, but although yahoo’s traffic is little, most of my conversions came from there. The new issue was that conversions were occasional conversions and I could not make any conclusions from the results.

At this point, I have had it with the whole marketing business. I told my son I am sick of this. I better stop and save my self the extra tension but deep within I did not want to fail. I never failed anything I attempted. I am not a quitter. I will not forgive myself if I stop now. I invested a lot of time and money in this I can’t leave it now. Others were able to make it work for them, I should be able to but I must find a way that works for me. 

 My son said mom stop looking for easy ways. What these guys taught you might have worked for them. You learnt a lot and you gained a lot of experience in what does not work. Now, you must focus on building your own business your way and learn what works. No more quick get rich schemes.

I was not looking for get rich quick schemes, I am not stupid to believe it. I was made to believe that it is possible to make a business without a web site, a mailing list, a product etc… This is promoted by gurus and super affiliates. 

I had to take another direction. 

I realized that if I want to have a proper internet business, I must build my own web site and start attracting people to it. To do that I should give away something of value first. So I came up with my own give away–a single page with my unique personal touch.

It outlined a scientific experiment (since I am a scientist by training) about what works and what doesn’t with weight-loss. I already had some experience with this because over the past few years I changed my diet and started a successful exercise routine that helped me lose 15kg over 3 months. Later, many of my female colleagues had asked how I did it and I showed them with excellent results.

This became my unique selling point that would help me sell not JUST one affiliate ebook on weight loss, but all kinds of related affiliate products.

Of course, this meant a new learning curve.

How would I build a web site? It all seemed so difficult. I never did that before.

It turned out it is not a big problem. Jim gave me the link to a capture page generator program he designed. I answered a few questions and had a page in minutes. 

In addition, I took a few HTML lessons to understand how to modify the page to look nicer. After a few tweaks in Frontpage, I was ready to go. 

Since I didn’t know the problem with my Google account, I started a new one. I started by only advertising my landing page on the Google search network. I used only ONE targeted keyword with its broad, phrase, and exact match. I started my bid with $2 but I got clicks for an average of 60 cents over several days.

My quality score is good finally. And I don’t share the same URL with other marketers. In fact, I don’t even share the same offer any more because of my own landing page and autoresponder series. Every day I add one extra keyword to increase my traffic gradually. I modify my landing page to suit each key word theme to maintain my quality score. 

I was under the impression that building your own web page requires a lot of work compared to direct linking. But the truth is once I created the landing page the amount of work I do is minimal and the results are much more promising.

Impressions Problems Solved for Clickbank Affiliates Marketing “Diet & Fitness”

Google Adwords has given them problems recently. Particularly the Content Network has been refusing to show many ads in the diet and fitness industry. Since this is the most common affiliate product out there, I think it’s important that we address it.

This also applies to people marketing “Make Money” products.

Oddly enough, so far my own ads have not been affected in the same “Make Money” market. So obviously you too should be able to get your ads going.

I had a theory that the problem was that Google didn’t like regular affiliates any more. And after much back and forth, we finally got to the bottom of the problem. Here’s what happened…

Google starts off giving impressions on Content Network ads and then after a few hours would kill off the ads. So we got in touch with support to find out what the deal is.

First, the staff made obvious suggestions like “bid higher”, “check your daily budget”, and “target more countries”.

At one stage we were bidding $2 per click on keywords that should NOT have been that competitive. We had a daily budget of $500. And we targeted 65 countries. I did this just to prove to the Google staff that their suggestions are bogus.

So we got in touch with Google again, who seem to have eliminated their “live chat” feature for whatever reason.

After multiple messages, and persistence on our part, support forwarded our complaint to their technical team.

The technical staff suggested that we do not promote diet and fitness products as they are currently being prevented from syndicating on their networks. And upon further prompting from us, we discovered that this will soon become a permenant part of their policy. (Although I highly doubt the truth of this since the Acai Berry ban was never publicised in their rules and policies).

To be honest, I find this hard to believe.

We’re talking about two of the very largest industries and biggest money makers for Google. And it would make little business sense for them to eliminate relevant ads from showing up in Adsense blogs and sites that feature related content.

To top it off, I was seeing ads both on content and search that DID feature weight loss, diet, and fitness products. So some marketers were getting impressions.

Also, I was surprised that NONE of Google’s support staff were aware of what the technical team told us. It was only after the complaint reached the Adwords technical staff that we were told such ads are not allowed on the content network any more.

So rather than bend over for Google support staff (who seem to be as illiterate as non-marketers), I started to do a series of experiments with my students.

The first was to address the harsh reality that affiliate pages are AWFUL duplicate content.  Thousands of affiliates are running ads to the SAME page competing on the same words. We built our own landing pages with an optin box and “bribe”. Yes, the bribe had to be original too to pass manual review.

We ran a small test ad on my students’ account. And after almost an entire day, the ads failed to get any impressions.

So I tested a related set of keywords but avoided anything that says “weight loss” in both the ad and keywords.

Still, nothing.

I raised the bids. And still nothing.

I then took the exact ad group into one of my own accounts and tested it. Within a few hours I had 6,000 impressions!

What!?

Yeah, obviously Google didn’t mind my account which spends thousands a day. But on my students’ accounts there were issues. I believed that somehow the previous accounts had been flagged as bad users of Google and their content network.

So I instructed one of my students to open a brand new Adwords account and write a small ad on the Google Search Network only.

Once more, many hours later, the ad received NO impressions.

This time, I edited the ad myself. I noticed that it used the words “lose weight fast”. I thought that it could be interpretted to be a promise of a “miracle cure”. Google specifically prohibits this in their policies.

I removed references to fast weight loss in the ad copy and ran it again.

Within a few minutes, we were seeing impressions on the ad!

What’s more, even though the keyword was very competitive, we were able to get clicks for only 25 cents a click for the #1 position! The quality score was also high.

A few more tests later, we were able to establish a few rules of thumb that some of you doing weight loss ads should be aware of.

They will help you get your ads back in business 🙂

  1. If you’ve already been flagged for duplicate-offer marketing by Google, start a new account. It’s likely that if you’ve been noticing that no matter what your ad it won’t get impressions, you’ve been flagged. You can use the Google MCC (My Client Center) to manage more than one account with a single login.
  2. Use my Capture Page Generator to build your own self-hosted landing pages and become a value-added affiliate. You can check the resources section for recommended web hosts, autoresponders, and domain authorities.
  3. Phase your keywords in ONE at a time in order to establish which of your keywords might be the source of your original problem that got your account flagged earlier. That means you only add ONE keyword with one ad and wait a day or so.
  4. Do not advertise on the content network until you have estbalished your credibility as an advertiser with good quality scores and well-behaved campaigns. This could be a matter of several weeks.
  5. Avoid trigger words in your ad copy that might be interpretted as miracle cures like “make quick money” or “lose weight fast”. Test out different alternative wording until you find something that Google accepts. Allow at least 15 minutes between tests.
  6. Run your ads on the content network only after you’ve got successful search campaigns.

PPC Too Expensive for Home Business Niche?

Even some of the PPC gurus will tell you that Home Business and MLM are difficult niches to conquer with Google Adwords.

“The competition is too rough.”

“The bid prices are too high”

I don’t buy it. For the past two years I’ve been generating home business leads, sponsoring reps, and making sales with profit. And in case you think that’s because I’ve got some kind of super powers, go search for my PPC Domination students. You’ll hear their similar success stories in video and blogs all over the internet.

The reason I’m laughing particularly hard today, is that I discovered a campaign I’d neglected recently. It wasn’t bringing much traffic.

A few days ago, while looking at something else in my account, I had set the date range to show “all time”. When I saw 386 leads on this forgotten campaign. I clicked to look inside and found this:

Now, I know it’s kind of hard to see the names of the adgroups, and you can’t tell what keywords are in there (hehe I’m evil). That’s because the real secret is that this campaign only targets the Google Content Network. That’s why, in the next few weeks I’ll be releasing some training on the Content Network and show you how to easily get cheap leads like this for your own business.

Anyway, I quickly duplicated the discovery, deleted adgroups, added more adgroups, increased my daily budget, and started to ramp it up.

Today, there are only 10 adgroups in this campaign. I can’t tell you a daily figure it’s bringing because it’s too fresh…but I took this snapshot 4 hours into the day:

To do today (in order of importance):

  1. Create an updated split-test spreadsheet for Mike and check if we have enough data with 500 clicks to make a conclusive decision in favour of one headline over another.
     
  2. Record my screen with Camtasia and demonstrate how i revise an entire PPC campaign that has been underperforming lately.
     
  3. Finish one of the three blog post ideas i started but saved as drafts and never finished.
     
  4. Transfer this blog to another hosting and test if it’s faster than this crappy godaddy hosting. Right now it gives DNS error for almost every time i try to load the page and it takes me half an hour just to get into my admin panel grrrrr. testing hostgator and hostdepartment. Hostdepartment used to suck because it was unreliable but i think they’ve overhauled it and it seems to be the fastest so far. Hostgator takes ages just to get into their webhosting cpanel so i’m not holding my breath for them. Let’s see how we go! Btw, if you get an error when you try to load my blog later can you report it for me here please? Thanks.
