How To Come Up With Lateral PPC Keywords

Get creative…think outside the box…build a keyword list unique to you.

A reader wrote in last week with the following question…

“Ewan,

I’m starting ppc marketing and have hit a brick wall. How do you build on top of your main keywords? I have got about 20 and can’t think of any more. That’s never going to take my business to the next level.”

It’s a great question and one I hear over and over again from marketers entering the ppc battlefield.

The cool part is that 20 keywords could easily make you $20,000/mo. In fact, I have a friend who is consistantly doing $25,000/mo from 4 keywords. :)

But it’s near impossible to do this from a standing start. You will have to build a bigger list and find what’s working for you.

I Feel Your Pain

I too, when starting ppc, hit the very same wall. My first training taught me to open an excel spreadsheet and list as many keywords related to my product as I could. I think I got around 12 and seriously thought there were actually NO MORE. 😉

More Pain

Being an inexperienced ppc marketer, the next frustration was the ‘newbie tax’ :( – the first keywords you come up with that are usually very generic and not ‘buyer keywords.’ Every single marketer in your niche is doing the same. This means you have to pay through the nose for these generic keywords and they often don’t convert. 1000’s of dollars and leads later = no sales!!!

I was looking for MLM-type keywords. My list went like this…

MLM, Network Marketing, Home Business, Work From Home. Very generic, agree? People searching for this are generally ‘just looking’ and cost you lots of wasted ad-spend.

Getting creative, thinking outside the box, and building a keyword list unique to you, is important if you are going to create a killer ppc campaign. Find keywords with low competition, which are extremely qualified, then line them up like soldiers ready for battle in neat little ad groups. This can bring you crazy results. So…

“Send visitors searching under my brand name to my home page – from a keyword they entered with the assumption they know something about my company (or brand, or product or service) without specifically knowing what they’re searching for (apart from my company)?”

Or…

“Create an optimized landing page around some free content that’s going to be engaging to my target audience – directing the company name PPC searches to this page – and include a sign-up form on the landing page?”

Dear Fred, definitely the latter!

Let’s dive into this…

How To Generate A Lead Using PPC

As a PPC advertiser, select which keywords you want to target with ads.

Then write targeted and relevant ad copy which people looking for those keywords would be interested in.

Don’t use the ads to make a sales pitch.

Instead, use the ad to attract visitors to a lead page or opt-in form.

Here’s the rational:

The “go for the jugular” approach (where you try to make the sale immediately) is far less effective online. Instead, it’s preferable to focus on generating leads. Collecting a stranger’s name and email address is much easier than persuading him to buy right away. It also allows more time to build the trust and credibility needed for short term sales and  long-term buying relationships.

Hands down, THE best way to get more leads is to use PPC

However, there is a ton of misinformation across the web on this topic.

You generate leads with PPC by connecting the searcher, who has an idea in his head of what he is looking for, with the ad you put on the PPC engine. This directs to your landing page when the searcher clicks your ad.

The key is to keep in mind what a person is looking for when inputting their request on a search engine – no matter if it’s Google, Yahoo, Bing or YouTube.

Same concept for Facebook as well but with Facebook it’s based on demographics.

When running a PPC campaign your task is to optimize your campaigns by managing the relationship between clicks, conversion and cost.

Keep conversions increasing while watching the cost to drive each conversion down.

In theory, this is a simple concept but many a PPC advertiser have lost their shirt pursuing this process.

Let’s conclude with the main ingredients for PPC lead generation success…

  • Implement Conversion Tracking.
  • Comprehensive Keywords: generate a list of keywords that you refine to find the keywords which convert best for you.
  • Proper Landing Pages: Don’t send the traffic to your home page. Ads should have landing pages.
  • Lead Generation Form: Keep it simple.  Research has shown that less is more. Usually just ask for name and email, or only email.
  • Offer an Incentive: a free trial, 30 day discount, etc. Incentives increase conversions.
  • Make it Easy to Contact: Just because they found you online via a paid search doesn’t mean they might not want to pick up the phone to call you. Make it easy for your leads to contact you.

Why Do PPC Campaigns Die

Common sense for the PPC ignoramous of the marketing world.

Because things can change fast, and if you’re not showing up to react to the changes, or progressively stay in front of change, you lose. Game over. Go home. The PPC campaign dies.

So you should be evaluating your PPC campaigns on a regular basis. This is the only way to stay ahead of a constantly changing market. The moment you stop managing your PPC campaigns is the moment they die.

Here are just a few quick tips to prevent your PPC campaigns from completely dying out, but by all means not an exhaustive list.

Know your metrics

This is most important, so I’ll write it first…

Figure out how much it costs to acquire a customer. Then make sure you aren’t spending more to obtain a customer on clicks that what you’ll earn as a result of acquiring the customer. Common sense really.

You’ll see a helpful list below this point here, but suffice to say, if you are paying more than you make, your campaign will be donezo!

Keep abreast of new features

The Google Adwords platform has dramatically changed over the years. Microsoft adCenter has made a comprehensive round of recent changes.

Take advantage of change. Evaluate your campaigns using the tools that the engine provides.

Always be evaluating

Pay attention to the obvious i.e. click-through rates and conversions. Study the not-so-obvious i.e. the copy that most appeals to your audience. Then, amplifly the positive. Eliminate the negative.

Study your competition

The more time you spend and deeper you go with competitive intelligence, the more questions you’ll develop. Before long, you’ll start to make predictions about your competitors’ behavior. This will lead to your own campaign adjustments.

Why GenX’ers Are The Best Entrepreneurs

It’s my observation that GenX’ers are the best Internet marketers.

In fact, methinks we’re the best entrepreneurs, period.

How can I say such a thing?

Well, first off, I’m biased.

But besides that, I don’t think baby boomers and Gen Y’ers or today’s narcissistic whiney little “Gen Texters” have the advantages my brood have.

Here’s what I mean:

1. We were the “latchkey kid” generation

i.e. we fended for ourselves.

When I was in middle school and high school, I came home to an empty home. Made my own meals. And was alone with my brother (usually fighting haha) until my mom (who worked her fingers to the bone as a waitress) got home around midnight or 1 am.

You can’t help but be more independent growing up like that.

And so we’re a generation of individualists.

We dig freedom over security. Have zero tolerance for meddlesome bosses/clients. And basically give authority the “finger.”

Traits that serve entrepreneurs well…

2. Work ethic

Many of us GenX’ers came from divorced homes and watched our parents work their cans off, only to have the corporate world chew them up and spit them out when they were done with them. As a result of watching them work so hard, we ended up with work ethics I just don’t see in other generations (as a whole) since my grandparent’s time.

We also learned (early on) there is no true “job security.”

That you cannot trust politicians.

And if you want something, go out and seize it.

Nobody’s gonna do it for you.

And even if they do, it won’t turn out as good as if you do it yourself…

3. No Internet

We didn’t grow up with an iPhone in our hand.

In fact, I remember as a kid we took a field trip to the library where we would get to see (gasp!) the Apple 2! It was a huge deal to even have an Atari that played Pacman (and you were considered to be well-to-do if you could even afford that).

Cell phones?

Please.

I had a sticker in my wallet that had a special 4 digit code I could dial from a pay phone that allowed me to call collect without going through the operator.

I think this gives us a huge advantage.

Why?

We like and understand technology.

But we don’t rely on it.

(I doubt many baby boomers do, either.)

I dare say many of us don’t even trust technology (probably thanks to growing up with movies like “The Terminator” and “War Games”…) Which is why many of us online GenX’ers (I’ve noticed) tend to be more likely to study old school marketing studs — like Halbert, Kennedy, Schwartz, Bencivenga, Carlton, etc — and not some flash-in-the-pan goo-roo who makes their living doing JV’s with other online marketers with big lists.

4. Not afraid to get our hands dirty

We didn’t have the Internet when I was in school. I mean, it existed, but it wasn’t anything anyone got excited about. And most of us hand wrote out our research papers (putting ideas down on 3X5 note cards) and then went to the library to type them up.

(Yes, on typewriters.)

Since then, we’ve had the “cut & paste” generation.

No attention to detail.

No time invested to do the job right.

And thus, (I’d bet) no real joy in earning what they take.

Anyway, that’s my opinion.

Obviously, not all GenX’ers are cool, and it doesn’t mean the other generations all suck.

This is just a brain fart about generational advantages.

(So let’s keep this in context, okay?)

Even so, I suppose I should brace myself for the onslaught of “yeah but!” comments that will zing into my inbox from members of the other generations.

But that’s okay.

That kind of whining will simply prove my point.

Home Business Owners Take A Heavy Defeat

Home business owners face heavy defeats in business. Due to this, some businesses fail. The difference between those which fail and those which succeed is the level of professionalism the business owners has. I think I was one of millions who just got the shock of their lives after reading…

As everyone discussed the result, I couldn’t help but notice the message for home business owners here, screaming at me like an unfed baby.

it’s possible you don’t see it yet, but stay with me…

Manchester Utd’s has had 7 heavy defeats in seasons gone by, yet they have still gone on to win the league. I will put my neck on the line and say that they will probably do the same this season and come May, 2012, they will be lifting the trophy.

This 6-1 defeat will be merely a bump in the road.

They are a team of amazing professionals and the next time they pull on their socks to again grace the turf, that result will be forgotten.

Amateurs let bad results affect their future performance.

Not professionals, 6-1 defeats are a part of playing the game and it’s no different for a home business owner.

Our 6-1 defeats can come in many different forms…

  • a PPC campaign you spend a $1000 on, doesn’t convert
  • Google shuts down your account
  • you spend ages building out a website and it flops

The key is to limit the 6-1 defeats.

The odd one is ok, take it on the chin and learn from it, but if it’s happening every week you have a problem.

When you look around the home business scene, it’s not to hard to see that most people are taking a 6-1 defeat every other week.

Manchester Utd are a first class outfit, and they are extremely well prepared. Hence the success they have had, but if they weren’t then 6-1 defeats would be a more regular occurance for them.

As home business owners, we need to be far better prepared to do what it is we do. You need to have all your bases covered. From your business philosophy to the graphics on your website.

DO NOT leave anything to chance, that way 6-1 defeats turn into way more 6-1 wins for your business.

Poor Students Make Poorer Freelancers

Do you provide a service and want to get more clients? The best gigs come from Word of Mouth of happy clients, but few contractors receive clients by referral because they do not build a relationship with their clients. Let’s explore how you can improve your chances of getting referrals.

The River Jordan

“Remember your projects are due next class. If you need an extension, please bring a note from your parents,” Mrs. Pierce announced.

Although I was a smart student, I always wrote essays during lunch for her 10th Grade English class. Mrs. Pierce never seemed to notice. She gave perfect scores to all my last-minute writing.

 

Procrastination is a Bad Business Habit

Many entrepreneurs I’ve worked with are amongst the worst procrastinators I have ever met. Not long ago, we had a short experiment with Entrepreneurial Interns at YaghiLabs. My management staff had a nightmare keeping them on task.

When given assignments to do, it took two people to follow-up with them before assignments were submitted.

Similarly, hired freelancers were no better.

Service contractors forget they are businesses. A business has an obligation to deliver on time PERFECT work. Nothing is worse than gaining a reputation for being slow.

It cause clients substantial loss.

 

Mrs. Pierce didn’t like me very much.

My English teacher thought I was disruptive. She gave me the lowest grades on conduct and effort.

However, unlike most bad students, I was a gifted child. Teachers had no choice but to acknowledge that, even if they disliked me.

My high school streamed students into four:

A-Stream, B-Stream, C-Stream, and Special Needs.

I was not a special needs student, in fact I was in the highest stream competing with the most gifted children….in most of my classes.

However, English, Art, and Physical Education, were mixed – our classmates were from the B, C, and Special Needs streams.

Teachers had no choice but to teach the curriculum slowly to accommodate the less capable. This was boring and meant I was often idle.

So with the competition this easy, I could afford to slack off in Mrs. Pierce’s class and still outshine the rest.

I’m sure it infuriated her because even even when I seemed distracted, she never could catch me with those questions teachers ask students who aren’t paying attention.

When Mrs. Pierce announced that our projects on, “River Jordan” was due, I realised I had not even finished reading the novel, let alone started the project!

“Mrs. Pierce,” I called while raising my hand. “What would you like the note from our parents to say…if we need an extension, I mean.”

She frowned in my general direction. “Well, you need to have a good excuse and the note should say why you’ll be late.”

“What kind of excuse is a good one?” I persisted.

She gave me one of her piercing looks and ignored me. I hated her a little more.

 

Hired Help Online Requires Smart Management

At least in school, we had to get a note to be excused from handing in assignments on time.

Contractors, it seems, always become absent from email, phone, and chat when they are behind. It’s a nightmare of stress when this happens. Often, they quit without warning, rather than admit they made a mistake.

I wish contractors would just inform me when they expect delay. At least I would have a chance to do damage control with my clients and customers.

Should we tell our client, “Sorry the video you paid for is going to be late because one of our staff is MIA.”

That is embarrassing and unprofessional! It is not fair on our client  to lose money because of our incompetent staff.

 

My Mother Gives Me an Excuse

That evening, when I got home, I approached my mother innocently, “Mum. I need a note for an extension. I haven’t finished my Enligh assignment yet and it’s due tomorrow. Can you say I was sick last week?”

Don’t laugh.

My parents did anything to help me get ahead in school. They gave excuse notes to get out of detention, to avoid swimming, and anything else I needed. Of course they didn’t encourage this behaviour, but I knew they didn’t want me to get poor grades. And I took advantage of them.

Mother always signed notes with just “B.Y.”, her initials.

She told me that if I really needed a note (eg, I forgot my gym shorts which would have earned me detention), I could write an excuse note and sign on her behalf. I never did it, but it gave me confidence to ask.

 

Excuses are For Losers

Many Contractors are only in business because they were poor employees, and useless school students before that. They became MASTERS of excuse-making.

From humble, “Dog ate my homework” beginnings, to “my parents got divorced,” to “I’m going through a divorce” as adults. Their excuses are endless – but they’re also difficult to challenge.

I’m usually a nice guy. I don’t have the heart to openly challenge someone who claims their work is late because their finance was in a wreck. But it seems such excuse-makers attract disaster.

The professional contractor works through their pains and problems and doesn’t make them someone else’s problem.

Management is something I had to learn in the School of Hard Knocks. The rule, regardless of how good the excuse, is always the same:

If a hired hand makes an excuse in their first assignment, I equate it with incompetence.

 

I Strike, Rudely

Sure enough, the next day, when my classmates were handing in their assignments, I walked over to Mrs. Pierce’s desk and produced the note from my mother.

My lips were twisted into a smirk, intended to betray me. Mrs. Pierce caught my eye, and I stared back at her just long enough so she would notice my expression.

I headed back to my chair without a word and sat.

“Jim!” She called from the front of the room.

“Yes, maam?” I responded feigning innocence.

“A word please,” she said dryly.

I walked back to her desk and held her gaze.

“This,” she indicated to the open note in front of her, “is not the handwriting of an adult.”

I gasped, insincerely. She indicated at the blue-inked initials at the bottom of the note. She continued, “And this is not your mother’s signature.”

Leaning into her face while resting my arms on the other side of her desk, I looked into her brown eyes and countered, “What are you saying? That I forged this note?”

Her trembling lips betrayed her impatience.

But naughty child I was, I couldn’t help myself. I wanted to push her – just a little over the edge.

Without so much as a pause, I continued cooly, “No offence, Ma’am. But what level of education do you need to be a school teacher? My mother is a highly educated woman. She has a PhD and teaches at the University. Whether you believe it or not, this IS her handwriting – and I think it’s a great effort for someone who speaks English as a second language. How many languages do you know?”

I tapped at the note indicating the signature. “This is how my mother signs her notes. Anyway. If you don’t believe me, I’ll give you our home phone number and you can call her yourself.”

Look, I was a child. I’m not proud of this, I only tell the story because it was a little funny. However, it took many years of personal development to rid myself of this bad habit. It was affecting my business.

Nobody wants to work with an unreliable partner. No client wants to hire a slow contractor. Opportunities come and go very quickly, and if a business is inefficient and gives poor quality last-minute work, they hurt the clients they serve.

Excuses have no place in business. They’re made by employees to employers.

A good manager asks their employees to sign an agreement that says if they expect delays, they must inform them in writing immediately.

Why do I do this?

Because it keeps my employees accountable; particularly online where reliability is scarce. If there ever is a reason for delay, I need to at least know in advance so I can make backup arrangements.

In fact, I expect delays, no matter how highly paid the contractor. I always assign tasks to TWO contractors at a time.

Does this cost more money?

Yes, in the short-term. But I lost clients who spent tens of thousands of dollars with our business because of one contractor’s screw up. Having two contractors working on one task reduces the odds of both failing.

However, we should not have to do this! We need to deal with professionals.

 

Mrs. Pierce was FURIOUS.

She had to take a breath to keep her temper.

“Fine. Give it to me,” she said tightly.

In a tone of obvious disdain, I slowly dictated the numbers.

Mrs. Pierce wrote the number on the back of the note and sent me back to my desk.

Thinking back, I have to give it to her; Mrs. Pierce was an extraordinarily patient teacher! Had one of my online business students spoken to me the way I did to Mrs. Pierce, I would have returned their money and shut them out of my classes.

 

The Phone Rings

All weekend, I worked on the River Jordan assignment and completed it. On Monday, the assignment was submitted. But to my disappointment, Mrs. Pierce did not call for several days.

It was 6 O’Clock. We had just finished dinner.

The phone rang.

I picked up. “Hello?” I said.

“Yes. Hi this is Mrs. Pierce from Mt. Roskill Grammar. Is Mrs. Yaghi there?”

I smiled. I’m sure she could hear it.

“Oh! You mean, Dr. Yaghi? Yeah, she’s here, I’ll get her.”

“Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam!” I called. “It’s for you. My English teacher.”

The conversation lasted for a brief moment. I sat beside my mother. She confirmed she’d written the note while I giggled in the background.

 

Competition in Business

I received an A on that assignment. Was it because it was an A-effort from me?

No way.

But grades are assigned competitively. If one’s classmates are weak, their teacher has no choice but to award the top student with an A.

An A, however, does not say that it was A quality work. In another class, this last-minute work would have received no more than a C.

I got away with it because the class only had a handful of A-Streamers. The rest, our competition, were B and C stream students and Special Needs children. It’s easy to stand out in that crowd.

But in Business?

That won’t fly for you or me. If the market is saturated (and online, it often is), you’ll make little to no money.

On the other hand, if you raise the bar and stand PROUD with work that amazes even you, then yours will be the most demanded business of all.

Look at any successful organisation like Google or Apple – do you think they look at the little start-up technology companies and say well at least we’re better than them…or do they shine because they compete with their own best efforts?

The choice is yours, Contractor.

You can leave your work to the last minute and stay tiny, insignificant.

Or you could outdo yourself, over-deliver and look for ways to give you customers the best experience ever.

Just know this: Excuses are for naughty children.

3. Powering the Dream : Part 3 – “Cool Business” Series

Let’s start from scratch.

For you, let’s imagine a business idea that fully replaces the Home Business system gimmicks you’re used to and that excites you and your customers.

We worked on a CENTRAL THEME last time; the grand vision for your business and what you stand for—your uncompromisable values. If you found that lesson a little difficult to action, then it’s likely because a Vision is abstract.

It requires a business idea to bring it to life.

Today’s lesson will help you find your business idea. Not just any business idea though; one that is seeping with passion and is inspired by your values, motivations, and abilities. Audiences will desire contact with your product or service because it stirs their most primitive emotions.

Let’s begin with a case study.

A Computer In Every Home

For 14 years, Bill Gates of Microsoft fame was ranked the richest man in the world.

As he was often quoted saying, his dream for Microsoft was:

A Computer in Every Home”.

Gates’ vision came from a central belief he holds of EQUAL OPPORTUNITY in learning, regardless of socio-economic class. It is a dream we can all share! Although the theme itself is hard to pinpoint in the statement, we can see the same belief carried to another one of Gates’ organisations… the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The vision statement there says:

“We are dedicated to bringing innovations in [learning] to the global community.”

Notice that “computer” has been exchanged with “learning“. And that “every home” has been exchanged with “global community“. The vision is basically the same, but the way the goal is achieved is different.

In Microsoft, Gates achieves the vision by selling software.

In the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he does it through charity to schools and investment in research.

The business idea is the vehicle which allows the vision of the founder to be realised.

Similarly, in dramatic works of literature or film, we find that the theme of a story is also abstract and not unique at all. The PLOT, on the other hand, tells us a series of unique actions and events in such a way that the central theme is demonstrated to the audience.

For example, suppose your vision is:

“Delight children and encourage their imagination.”

Not so profound is it?

One might choose to achieve that vision in any way they like. For instance, my friend Shereen, who is very artistic, creates and sells beautiful decorations for children’s playrooms and bedrooms. On the other hand, another entrepreneurial mother who has some experience with computer programming might create and sell educational online games for children. A single-dad might maintain a paid forum where he and other fathers exchange ideas on how to raise creative kids. And so on.

These are all good business ideas, aren’t they?

Surely they are more interesting than generating traffic for someone else to sell their crappy products to– and watching while others profit from your hard work.

So where do people get their cool business ideas from?

Let’s take a look…

Before the PC there was the Teletype…

It was the late 60’s and computers were expensive and uncommon. When you wanted to use one you had to RENT a block of computer time on a mainframe (say, from General Electric). And since the real computer was somewhere else, you would need to use some sort of type-writer-printer gizmo to talk to it.

Not only that, but you needed to program it yourself.

Translation: Computers were neither accessible nor useful to regular people.

When Bill Gates was in the 8th grade his mother bought a Teletype terminal and rented a block of computer time for the school. Bill Gates became very interested in programming computers as a result.

Bill was in a pickle.

Gates wanted to spend all his time programming the computer but couldn’t afford it. Along with some naughty and ambitious friends he started exploiting loopholes in the system to steal computer time. He was eventually caught. So Gates made a deal with the computer company to find holes in their system in exchange for computer use.

As he made more of a name for himself, IBM asked Gates to create an operating system for their new personal computers. He agreed and charged them a one-time fee of 80,000 dollars!

But instead of selling the copyrights to IBM, he held onto them.

Gates predicted that other manufacturers would imitate IBM’s personal computers for cheaper and they will need operating systems too.

That’s exactly what happened. And Microsoft’s growth exploded. Today each home has MULTIPLE computers.

Most people try to come up with their business idea before they have a theme. However, in the story I shared with you about Microsoft, you can see that the theme is what gives rise to POWERFUL business.

Also, most people try to build a business in an area where they are limited in resources, knowledge, and skill. So they have a lot to learn before they can start earning. The following exercise will help you take stock of your existing resources and eliminate learning time in rendering your product.

Exercise:

Each of the topics below is a fundamental resource needed by an entrepreneur to successfully build a business.

Use 5 sheets of paper and write one topic at the top of each page. Time yourself for 20-30 minutes, non-stop. Don’t take breaks and fill the pages with as many answers as you can come up with.  Keep adding to your answers until the time is up.

 

  1. KNOWLEDGE: Write down any qualifications, certificates, degrees, “how to” books, or courses you have ever studied or completed.
  2. CREATIVE OUTLETS: Write down all your creative outlets or hobbies that you enjoy or have enjoyed in the past.
  3. SKILLS: Write any skills you possess that others admire or envy.
  4. WORK: Write all the jobs you have ever had.
  5. PASSION: Write every topic that fascinates you or has fascinated you in the past.

 

When you finish the exercise, study your answers. From each page, circle 1-2 items that you believe will be most helpful in achieving the vision you wrote in our previous lesson.

By the time you are done with the exercise, you should have a hot business idea you can build online. Put your idea somewhere safe and start investigating it. You’ll refer back to it in following lessons of this series.

Creating this business is going to be easy. You’ll profit from it quicker and you’ll have more fun working on it than any affiliate or marketing system you’ve ever tried. I promise!

Ronaldo’s Big Pay Day

It’s crazy, right?

With foreheads glued to the screen of their laptops, millions of Home Business owners sit around wasting away waiting for that little email that says:

“dude, you made a commission”

Don’t worry, that email is not coming.

Just recently, however, a story broke about someone who DID “get the email”. Its subject line probably went something like this:

“Dude, you’re getting 105 MILLION Pounds over the next 6 years!”

24 years old.

He was just bought from his old “program” for £80 million. The 24-year-old is receiving a whopping £9.5 million his first year with the new people. And like that’s not enough, he’s been promised a further 25% pay rise in each of the following five years of his deal. Amounting to… (gasp!) £556,000 a week in the final year.

Crazy. How can one man be worth so much money?

Now, I know this is an intensely debated subject, even more so when the economy is crumbling before our very eyes. While the masses are struggling to meet payments and put fuel in their cars so you’re probably either unimpressed or scrambling over to Clickbank to look for the affiliate program that pays out that much to 24-year-olds.

And if you were planning to look them up, the keyword to search for is “Real Madrid” because they’re the ones shelling out the dough (you won’t find them on Clickbank either).

WHY? Why would Real Madrid pay so much money for some kid who kicks a ball around all day?

Simple…

Since Ronaldo burst onto the scene almost 10 years ago, he has went from strength to strength, winning award after award and when he steps out onto the grass, he does things with a football that make most shake their heads in disbelief. He entertains millions. He often single-handedly wins games for his team.

Oh, and how can we forget, there’s the small matter of millions upon millions worth of sales in merchandise sold from the notoriety he builds around himself.

Ronaldo is a walking BUSINESS asset.

But, really? Is one man really worth that much money?

Hell Yea!!! He is one of a kind.

Now I wonder, what would happen to Ronaldo’s value if there were another million just like him?

Would he still be so special?

Would anyone pay money to “buy” him?

Would he be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds a week?

People are desperate to pay £80 Million for some ball-kicking PLAYER, but they refuse to spend even 20 pounds with Home Business affiliates.

INTRINSIC VALUE

Put simply, there is nobody else on the planet who can do what Christiano Ronaldo can do, and because of this, he has been recognised as the best player in the world and an asset that clubs all over the world are desperate to get their hands on.

On the other hand, Network Marketing, Affiliate Marketing etc is available to everyone.

While millions of eager Home Business owners will sit bashing the keyboard telling everyone about this awesome business they’re involved in…everyone else is doing the same thing.

The exact same thing: The exact same systems, promoting the exact same websites, and running the exact same ads, selling the exact same products.

Get where i am going with this?

There is no intrinsic value in being a system user or an affiliate marketer or a network marketer.

Instead of teaching people and pretending to be an expert on something you’re not so you can sell a product that doesn’t belong to you and probably bores your customers as much as it bores you….Why not find your own passions, experience, and expertise? Then base your business on it.

Sell something you ARE an expert at.

Good news is, there is only one of you. And the years you spent mastering your hobby or your trade are your secret advantage in a market place. Few can compete with it.

So with a couple brain cells and a touch of creativity, you can take yourself out of the ‘as everyone else’ category, and contribute your own real world value. A value that you have inside you by being who you are.

The Things That Matter

Gayle was full of energy, she oozed with it.

When I first met her, it took a moment for my brain to register her dialect. Suddenly, I was overwhelmed with a nostalgia one can only feel…for home.

By god it was the rugged sound of a Kiwi accent.

Having grown up in New Zealand and done much of my university education there, I was over the moon. I adjusted my hearing over from the californian english i’d grown accustomed to over the past weeks into a dialect of english spoken in rural new zealand. i couldn’t contain my excitement. She knew it.

I asked. She answered. What of our beloved city? What new slang do they have? What old words from school days that we forgot? Which buildings have come and gone? And on it went.

How strange that I picked to wear my New Zealand “All Blacks” t-shirt that day. Coincidence, i swear. But Gayle was pleased with my pride of New Zealand.

Quickly, one of the boys who knew Gayle’s story filled us in over dinner.

She was no ordinary networker. She’d spent over 100,000 dollars last year following her uplines’ advice trying to grow a residual income. All to no avail. What frustrated Gayle most was that it felt like it was only yesterday when she was a REAL businesswoman. Now the reason I shared that letter with you wasn’t to show you how popular i am. It’s just some good ole social proof being craftily used to underline the importance of you listening to me…

I’m always being asked, “How can i generate more leads?”. And since i’m a geek who had no friends in school, i’d start on a long technical explanation of the best traffic sources and which is better for whom…

And i would have wasted my time answering.

Whoever asks this question isn’t making money. Because whoever has actually generated ANY kind of income from their business knows that the traffic method is really irrelevant to whether or not they generate money.

And gurus are keen to exploit these nice guys who are trying to find the magical lead source that all the internet millionaires are keeping to themselves.

Silly billies.

It doesn’t matter if they use social media or article marketing, ppc or seo.

Traffic is easy. I got gangs of it they can have.

But no selling sequence? What does that do to one’s business?

Traffic is worthless if you’re not doing something with it. If a marketer doesn’t have a way to turn traffic into buyers, then that marketer can NEVER make money. No matter how long they’ve been working at it. And getting traffic from facebook is as much a waste of time as getting it from ppc or seo or whatever.

I bet you 100 bucks that if you’re frustrated right now with your business and you’re not making the income that you’d like from it, then you don’t have a BASIC funnel setup. Just something that offers a prospect to buy something.

Without a funnel, You don’t have a business.

Unfortunately, I had no idea that was where most people were hung up. Until I got together with Gayle, Synthia, Matthew, and others who joined me recently in mastermind and coaching sessions.

In less than 24 hours, she had nearly 50 home business leads for less than 30 cents each. You know what though?

Gayle could have spent months trying to learn and implement all the copywriting, technical, and traffic secrets…but what for? Her first try is already outperforming the traffic of some of the industry’s top producers.

Mis-Spell Generator Or Typo Generator: “The Keywords That Prospects Search But Few Advertisers Bid On”

According to Google, 10-20% of all searches start out MIS-SPELLED.

Capturing those searches by bidding on them with Pay-Per-Click is one of the smartest ways to easily and cheaply capture prospects. It gives you the advantage of positioning your Adwords ad in front of potential prospects–before they see any of your competitors’ ads. But few people know the proper use of Typo Generator tools.

I’ll tell you my method in a second. Check this out…

There is insane competition for popular home business keywords in Pay-Per-Click. And yet, there is virtually no competition when the same keyword is misspelled.

Why not?

Advertisers rarely test all mis-spelling variations of each keyword, or they think that their search volume isn’t worth the time to investigate.

For a moment, I’d like you to imagine this: You have 10 mis-spellings of 5 very popular keywords, each getting an average of just 20 searches a day when misspelled–that would make you a cool 1,000 daily impressions. 

Better still, consider that since the competition is significantly less, you’d have two new advantages versus bidding on one correctly-spelled and very popular keyword:

  1. Cheaper average CPC (less dollars per click)
  2. and More conversions (less clicks per lead)

To understand why bidding on less popular mis-spelled keywords gets you more conversions, let’s get into the shoes of your prospect for a minute.

First of all, they’re in a rush and due to keyboard slips, accidents, and just straight-up ignorance they type their search with a mistake. Google and other searches try to help the searcher by making suggestions for the correct spelling, but they still return results anyway.

Suppose you were your prospect. You search for “home bizness leads” instead of “home business leads”. There’s a single sponsored ad on the right and few search results. Google tells you that you might have made a mistake. Do you a) re-run the search with the correct spelling immediately or b) glance above the fold of results to see if there’s something that matches what you’re looking for?

Alright, let’s suppose you either didn’t like what Googled returned for the wrongly spelled search of “home bizness leads” or you decided to fix your mistake and search again. Either way, you are now looking at results for “home business leads”. There are 70 million of them and there are thousands of ads.

Your attention is split between everything on that page, because everything “sorta” matches.

On the other hand, with your first search, with spelling mistake, the only ad you could see was the one ad above the fold. If it matched what you wanted, you would have clicked it rendering all ads and all 70 million listing results for the correct spelling USELESS. Because the subsequent search for the correct spelling would never have happened.

Here’s another reason to bid on mis-spellings and typos. Using the Google Keyword Tool, let’s compare competition stats for both versions of the keyword:

Suggested CPC Bid for positions 1-3: $13.03

 

home bizness leads

Suggested CPC Bid for position 1-3: $0.05

 

I’m sure you don’t want to spend $13.03 for a click. But suppose you got greedy when you saw that the keyword “home business leads” receives a maximum of 13,000 monthly impressions (about 433 searches a day). Perhaps you bid, i dunno, $10 CPC to scrape the bottom of the first page of results–maybe get seen by a few people. Or perhaps you are a little careful with your bid, so you decide the second page is good enough for you and bid $5 CPC.

Besides the high CPC bid, now your ad is buried in a sea of “relevant” ads. The prospect has choice and instead of just clicking your ad because for its relevance, they’ll compare it and the page it goes to with every other contestant. Your click-thru-rate suffers. Your cost increases. Your conversion rate is reduced. Your quality score drops. Your ad rank drops. Your cost increases some more.

I paint a bleak picture. With competitive keywords, the ACTUAL traffic you get is never equal to the potential traffic available.

The alternative is to bid on the mis-spelled “home bizness leads” for 5 cents and hold the #1 spot above the fold. Whoever searches on this version will have little choice. They are more likely to click your ad merely because it is the only relevant one they can see. They are also more likely to optin because they don’t have anything to press back to. You’ll enjoy a high CTR. An phenomenal opt-in rate. Which result in lower cost per click, lower cost per lead, and high quality score.

This way, you’re in a better position to capture a majority of the potential traffic available. Four more misspellings, will easily get you 1,000 valuable daily impressions instead of the 433 available for the correct spelling.

So now that I’ve presented a small case for adding misspelled versions of popular keywords in your PPC campaign, let’s talk about how to implement this correctly:

 

  1. Use a mis-spell or typo generator to get as many variations on your main keyword as possible
      
  2. Import your keywords with correctly spelled ads into a Yahoo SEM account
      
  3. Bid 10 cents per click
      
  4. Run your ads for a full week before making any changes
      
  5. Sort your keywords by highest-to-lowest impressions
      
  6. Take the top 5 spellings of each seed keyword into your Google Adwords account and tweak them for maximum profit

How I Made Google My Bitch! (1,000 Home Business leads / day)

A few weeks ago, I hit my goal of 1,000 leads in a single day using PPC. Woohoo!

If you forget or never saw the post, you can check out the 1,000 Home Business Leads a Day challenge here.

Now if you’re expecting to hear some NEW big secret about how to achieve the same result, I’m going to disappoint you.

I made no discoveries…unless you consider it a secret that when I got off my ass I was able to pull 1,000 home business leads a day at an average cost of $2.35 each.

Anyway, I will share with you the actual work it takes to achieve this giant feat.

1. Sheer Number of Keywords

More keywords equate to more traffic.

It takes me about an hour to come up with half a million keywords. But I can’t do shit with traffic if it doesn’t come from people I care about. Quality traffic that converts into leads and sales requires that you test, trim, and expand wherever there is promise. This is the most time-consuming part and I usually do it one keyword at a time.

I just finished exporting one of my Google accounts to Excel to count for you the total number of active keywords. After deleting repetitions due to matching types, I was left with 1,880 high quality, tried and tested, relevant keywords.

Total Number of Keywords: 1880

2. Keyword-Specific Landing Pages

After clicking an ad, searchers have to land on a page that delivers exactly what they were promised. To maintain relevance, (over time) I built multiple landing pages on the advertised domain. I then sent each page only traffic that it was tailored for.

Total number of landing pages: 163

3. Know Thy Numbers!

By building your account slowly, you get a chance to tweak and improve your bids, keywords, ads, and landing pages without any major fuck-ups. In time, you start to know your business metrics–like how much a click should cost from a particular keyword, how often you expect people to optin to your landing page, how much a lead should cost to keep you in profit, and what your average customer value is. This means you’re not scared of new floods of traffic and you’re not scared of the money it’s going to cost you.

Average Optin Rate: 13%
Average Optin-to-Sale Rate: 4%
Average Cost Per Lead: $2.35
Average Initial Revenue / Lead: $3.80
Average Lifetime Value / Lead: $40

(With one day’s worth of 1000 leads, I spend $2,350 and make immediately $3,800, which is a profit of $1,450 in a single day. And over the lifetime of the customer, by selling other products, that day’s leads turn into $40,000)

4. Run Your Ads Every-DAMN-where:

Once you have stable business metrics and you know at what rate you convert clicks and leads into sales, you’ll want as much exposure as posible.

Don’t be a dumbass and go looking for more traffic before you got good (=profitable) metrics. Target other countries, use more PPC search marketing programs such as Yahoo, MSN, and Facebook. Advertise in all modes such as text, image, and video. You’ll be surprised how little competition there is in image and video ads. Use the content networks of Google and Yahoo as well as the Google partners and placement advertising.

That’s all folks. That’s how I finally managed to get 1,000 leads a day in Home Business and how you can too. Nothing new here…you just gotta stop being lazy like me and do some actual work.

Remember, a machine is only automatic after it’s been built.

Along Came a Spider

Last summer was perfect…

The weather was warm with a mild breeze. Compared to the sticky and humid Sydney summers I’d been through over the past three years, this was heaven. With relaxed body and clear mind, here I planned to create, record, and compile PPC Domination.

I arrived in Amman international airport in the afternoon. My baby brother picked me up.

Even though he’s nine years younger, I noticed he was now much taller than me. We kissed and embraced in our traditional style. I flinched as he brushed his stubbled chin on my cheek.

Sydney was behind me.

With a great sense of relief, I’d given away all my furniture to the Salvation Army, packed ONE bag with three changes of clothes, my computer hard drives, and my marketing books. Where I was going, I didn’t need any of it. So I burned everything else. Said goodbye to the only true friend I made in three years and boarded the plane.

Ironically, my greatest lesson in marketing was not to be found in those books I took with me.

It was, of all things, inside the garden of my fortress.

My home in Amman sits on top of a mountain. The rear-wall is unnecessary because it’s shielded from wind and weather by forest. But for the other three sides, the walls had to be errected high to keep the garden safe.

The garden is dear to me. It’s the envy of guests and the topic-of-choice with every outdoor feast.

All around the house, within its walls, a gardener helps carefully plant and maintain trees, vegetables, and fruit.

In the back, he’s planted plums, peaches, and cherries which are quite mature now. In their season, buckets overflow with sweet fruit.

The front entrance has roses that blossom in multiple colours–almost immediately after being watered. Even now, as spring approaches, orange and black butterflies jump from one flower bud to the next.

Lined along the edges of the courtyard are lavender, sage, rosemary, mint, camomile, and thyme plants. When guests visit, they enjoy a special hot drink made from their mixed leaves while sitting around the fountain. Their children watch a movie projected on the west wall.

My favourite part of the garden, is one of the small “vineyards” right by the gate.

Here in the vineyard is where I made a remarkable marketing observation. Taught to me by nature itself.

In this part of the world, vines are hung and strung high. Metal bars are connected in a ceiling structure with lengths of wire between them. The vines are made to wind around these wires. When the vines bear fruit, the heavy load dangles from above.

Last summer, the first harvest was ripe and ready for picking.

As I stood in the shade of the leaves on a ladder clipping thick vines laden with grapes into buckets, I noticed spiders. The little guys were making homes between the tangles of grapes, leaves, and vines.

This discovery was strange to me. At first, I thought it was cute that the spiders shared my love of grapes. In fact, I thought they were the ones making the holes in some of them. But as I clipped on, I saw the truth.

These spiders were not fruit eaters. Some of their webs held captive small, dead and dying insects. They were actually predators!

After some research, I learned that spiders discovered, as they evolved through the ages, that grapes made excellent homes. Grapes with their bright colours, fragrant aroma, and sweet juices attract all kinds of insects. Spiders who live in a vineyard don’t have to work to eat–All they have to do is make their deadly webs between vines and wait. Dinner will be served.

Vineyards are a spider’s dream.

Here was the Attraction Marketing principle being demonstrated in nature itself. No marketing book could have showed me so colourfully what it means to find a rabid buyer base and give them exactly what they want.

Marketing, when you follow this basic principle is easy.

I feel sorry for network marketers who sleaze themselves all over their customers in the social networks: “Take a look at my widget”, “Please, visit my site!”, “Add me!”, or “Join my business!”

Because, if you have attractive goods, exposed to the right market, you would never need to ask.

You wouldn’t have to push for the sale. Ever.

In the case of the spider, he found insects already “buying” and made his web.

Hey and don’t think spiders are the only creatures who figured out how to use attraction marketing to lure eager customers into their web.

Think of the colourful roses and flowers in my garden blossoming in spring. Their fragrances being blown through the air and their sweet nectar rewarding the bee or butterfly that approaches. These insects, after they drink from the flower’s nectar, go on to repay the favour with a service: The service of carrying the flower’s pollen from male to female so their species can survive.

These laws of nature have evolved through millions of years of trial and error. Insects who failed have already paid with their lives, and sometimes their species’ existence.

As marketers, we need to take a lesson from nature: Marketing is easy when you live inside the vineyard:

  • Go where people are already looking and buying: Buyers search with search engines, so market there using PPC Google Adwords or Yahoo SEM.
  • Bid on buyer-keywords: People in buying mode know what they’re looking for–they’re running searches with specialised vocabulary, and industry jargon like “downline” and “sponsor”. Position yourself in front of searches like that, not the broad “work from home” kind.
  • Advertise an attractive bait that searchers want: People are looking for solutions and answers to their questions. They’re not looking for pills, potions, or MLMs.
  • Lay a web with your baited lead capture pages: Offer something valuable (not a sales pitch) in exchange for contact information.
  • Reward visitors of your site with a small taste of what they’ve been looking for: Once you get contact information, demonstrate to the prospect the happy experience of their problem solved with your product, service, or business opportunity.
  • Slowly expose them to your ideas so that the sale is a simple matter of fact: When you educate someone, they adopt your way of thinking and decision-making. They don’t need to be sold.

Remember, social networks are not the place for our sales pitches. People there want “fun” and socialization. Selling there makes people run away from you.

Heck, the spider gets it. He uses attraction marketing to survive. Surely, we can too.

I’m a bit weird like that, because I enjoy looking in my spam folder sometimes. It helps me appreciate all the time i saved with the love of my life, amazing, beautiful, sexy Gmail.

No.

What kills me is lazy people with a lottery mindset. I don’t feel sorry for them! They’re Always looking for shortcuts. They keep holding out, doing fuck-all for YEARS in Network Marketing for that lucky break.

They think, “If I can just (fluke) recruit a strong leader in my downline, I’ll finally start making money.”

And that’s why I hate when they ask me. They are lazy and are unashamed! They think there is a chance that I would come  join them in THEIR downline. Why would I?

Because their opportunity’s income potential is so amazing? If so, then why haven’t they been able to tap into it yet?

Or do they think I believe in the same myths they do?

Is the system or opportunity you buy what determines your success?

Systems and opportunities are lifeless products. They don’t work without pilot or master. Followers not leaders, buy products expecting them to turn them successful.

The marketing system they FOLLOW was created by a marketing LEADER. The reason they shift to a new opportuity that others are flocking to is only because major LEADING recruiters made money in it first.

Leaders don’t follow followers.

And that’s what they are. Followers the bunch of ’em. I can sniff a follower miles away. Ya know, the ones who, in quick succession quote quotables from multiple gurus (including myself)–and they think that it will make an impression on me.

These are the guys who spend all their “business time” faking it. Kinda like how they’re used to doing at their jobs. Expecting promotion without doing anything to earn it. Pretending to work, when they’re really playing solitaire on their PC and uploading photos on Facebook.

It’s miserable. I meet them every day, searching and jumping from one thing to the next. They think, “If I can just find that opportunity/system/product/comp plan/marketing product, that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I’ll finally start making money.”

Yeah? They can keep dreaming. They may as well believe in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy.

What are they 3 years old?

Speaking of childhood–
When I was 5, my neighbour was a lovely old lady. She tried to teach me about Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy (they werent part of my culture and my poor backward parents didn’t tell me fairy tales). Mum once told me a story about a genie and dad gave me a long lecture about how stupid it is to believe such tales.

Anyway, I played along and humoured her–letting old people feel useful is part of my backward culture. I let her write me a note to the Tooth Fairy and put it under my pillow as she asked me to. Keep in mind, I was 5. The idea of a “Fairy” just seemed STUPID.

Well, next morning, I found a coin under my pillow!  Yeah right, tooth fairy my butt. Mum, Who put that under my pillow?

When she wouldn’t tell me, I actually went outside and LOOKED for my tooth under my bedroom window. And I found it in the grass.

Sadly, that pleasant grandmother believed in the grown up’s version of the tooth fairy–the good ole New Zealand LOTTO. She went to a lot of trouble every saturday to buy her ticket. Each week she thought she had the winning numbers. For most of her adult life, she never missed a week.

Last year, she passed away. She never won. Not one cent.

And that’s what happens to those people looking for a fairy to come into their lives and save them from their misery. They mostly don’t win.

And the sad part is, they line the pockets of the few who win by design (not by chance).

As for you, you’re not them. You’re here, I believe in you. Don’t ask me why, but I do cause you have a smart look on your face. You HAVE a choice:

You can keep waiting for that one chance in a million–or a billion! And you may live your whole life broke and die that way.

Or, you can start now, and design your win. Do it manually, learn what the home business millionairs know. Don’t jump from short-cut to short-cut. Don’t quit your job and sell your car and max your credit card to the last cent so you can buy a fairy. Expect to spend 3-5 years in the trenches, master business and marketing skills–Take it as a career not a lottery. Then you’ll at least guarantee that in 3-5 years you’ll be able to travel to a country or two for that luxury holiday you always dreamed of.

I made my choice, paid my dues, and became a master of my business. Join me in my camp.

Everyone else can keep buying lottery tickets.

Jim Fights Some PPC Demons (and 16 New Leads / day)

My name is Jim Yaghi and you’re joining me on the second video of my coffee adventures.

For this adventure, and over the following weeks I’m going to scale up my Pay Per Click campaign from the 150 leads a day it’s bringing now to 3 times that — 450 leads a day. This is a stepping stone toward the eventual goal of 1000!

Last month I attended a live event in Las Vegas at the Venetian hotel called Inner Mastermind. If you’re into it, I shot some fun videos of my trip for that event. You can find them on my blog or Facebook.

Anyway, this month a product launched by the name of the Arbitrage Conspiracy which was a product of that event. In case you’ve been hibernating under a rock and you didn’t hear all the buzz, the story goes that three young fellas from Canada were consistently pulling in as much as 150,000 dollars PER day online using Pay Per Click. What was more interesting to me was that Aymen, the main speaker at the event told me that they spent between 50-100 thousand dollars a day on pay per click ads alone.

Naturally, when I was invited by my friend Mike Dillard to attend and represent Magnetic Sponsoring there, I jumped up. Within a few days I got on a plane and flew over from Jordan to Vegas!

There wasn’t a great deal of difference between what they were doing with CPA and what i was doing with home business opportunity leads using pay per click. I used Google Adwords and Yahoo they used Adwords and Yahoo. They also used MSN and some other smaller and less trafficked pay per click engines–which honestly i can’t be bothered with right now. I tried MSN before and their conversion tracking was making mistakes so I abandoned it.

Also, Aymen’s team were making customised landing pages for each keyword and placing a single keyword in each adgroup–and so was I.

None of their keyword research tools were new to me. They used the Google tool mainly, a few misspell and typo generators, word combiners, alexa, and so on–i was doing that already.

But i learned two very important lessons. One was the use of automation tools to build up massive keyword lists and upload them all in one shot. Obviously they didn’t filter these keywords too much becuase no one could do that to a list of 1 million words. Their strategy was to first sweep the market with these million keywords and find keyword types and themes that showed SOME results with low bids. And by tracking the keywords that worked, they would kill the ones that wouldn’t convert. And they would laser target their attack to improve their click rates, click costs, and conversion rates.

So as soon as I got home, I got to work.

I pulled up alexa and used its related sites feature to find domains in the network marketing and home business industry. A small list of about 50 domain names came out. I then used a typo and misspelling generator tool to turn that into a list of around 800,000 keywords.

Oh but Google’s quality score would shut me DOWN if i tried to upload those keywords to my account. Instead, i posted them to Yahoo becuase it’s less strict. Several hours and yahoo accounts later, i had the keywords all ready to go.

Ok, let’s pause for a minute. I’m in phase 1 right now. Remember the 3 challenges i have to go through? Impressions, clicks, and conversion.

Right now, I’m focused on phase 1 ONLY. Keywords that get impressions. That’s all i care about.

Well Yahoo gave me impressions–very few. In my experience, Yahoo has always been weaker than Google for the Home Business niche–maybe someone else has better luck with Yahoo than i do, i dont know.

Not to worry. What’s next?

Well, I’ve gotta take this stuff into Google where there’s lots of fish. Out of the 800,000 keywords, i had to choose! I sorted all the campaigns by impressions and took the top 4 keywords from each campaign.

Now I still worry about the Google Quality Score since i’m really not focusing on Click Thru Rate or conversions–i want to keep my landing page generic. So i figured i’ll place these keywords on the Google content network first. Again, that’s a much less strict place to advertise than is the Google search.

I ran this for a few days and lo-and-behold…not only did i get impressions and clicks, but i got a super high conversion rate!

Now i get about 16 new conversions from that little experiment. Not bad but i gotta get disciplined about repeating this a few more times.
