What’s the difference between sports and business?

I’ve found that when it comes to success, there’s isn’t much difference between the two.

On that note, I’ve got an ass-kicking experience to share with you today…

You see, back in my athletic prime, (hey come on, it wasn’t THAT long ago) I was a very active practitioner of Taekwondo.

For those who don’t know about this Korean martial art, it’s an accepted Olympic sport that emphasizes fast, high kicks and flashy footwork.

Anyway, when I first started 10 years ago I had a real knack for the sport. I pounced on it and practiced my kicks every day religiously, for MONTHS.

After a while, there were very few people who could even hold the pad against me during training. Thousands of kicks later I believed I had perfected them.

Or so I thought…

The problem was when it came down to actually testing my well-versed kicks in sparring with my seniors, it was clear that I was not good enough.

I had to get faster somehow. So I fine-tuned my techniques, over and over again, researched outside the scope of my class, studied different marital arts, even bought extra books trying to find secret ways to get faster and stronger.

But when I began to spar again, all that extra work still didn’t help!

Now I was really stumped. I had no idea why my practice wasn’t paying off in the ring. I was even faster and stronger than some of my seniors, but my kicks still weren’t landing.

Do you ever feel like that when trying to get your business off the ground?

You’ve got a great product, so why isn’t it selling?

You do things over and over again and get great results one day, then mediocre results the next?

 When I gained more experience and was able to adapt to my opponent’s weaknesses, ONLY THEN did all my practice pay off.

What’s YOUR primary purpose?

Blogging When You Hate Writing

“Can’t I just buy articles?”

Hey it’s jim.

Yes, it’s a fantabulous day. Did mucho work today, and I’m feeling farkin great.

You might have noticed these posts are reaching you a little later/earlier than you were used to. Why?

Because when I used to write them first thing in the morning, I’d sit on my lazy ass and call it a day.

Not ashamed to say this, writing is therapeutic for me and I enjoy the heck out of it.

But that’s not the case for most people. Like the other day, I was giving a consultation to a guy who wanted to become a blogger.

By definition, a blogger must BLOG!

Except, this nice chap, he tried every loophole he could to get out of writing.

“Can’t I just reblog?”

 “Can’t I just summarise someone else’s content?”

“Can’t I just buy articles?”

No. No. No. Was my predictable always response.

Blogging itself isn’t hard.

How hard is talking? We all do it.

When you have an interesting topic to begin with, you can talk for hours.

Here’s the secret to being able to write regularly (and sell)…

Start an idea bank. Simple.

I keep mine on the computer…but maybe your phone is a good place to store yours or on a notepad if you’re a little old fashioned.

There’s inspiration ALL AROUND YOU, you come across it every day. But since you never take a note of your good conversation ideas, when you sit at a blank New Post on WordPress, the ideas refuse to flow. It becomes a strain to write. And it takes forever.

Not with an idea bank!…the hard work of getting blogging ideas is taken care of ahead of time.

Just like telling jokes…you’ve probably heard TONS of funny jokes which had you in tears over the course of your life. But most people, when they come to tell jokes, they can only remember one or two.

The other day I was sitting with my mother’s brother. He told me about a doctor friend of his he meets with once a month.

He said this guy keeps a notepad in his pocket…and on it he has a list of one or two trigger-words per line that remind him of good jokes he heard throughout the month.

He keeps this updated so that when he meets with his surgeon friends, for TWO HOURS STRAIGHT, the guy rattles off one joke after the other. Everyone laughs. He’s a star.

Doesn’t take much to be entertaining…just keep an idea bank.

How To Create Screen Recording Videos For YouTube

Screen captures are easy and extremely powerful for a business or entrepreneur. This quick tutorial shows you how to get started.

Video is a great way to get your message across, establish yourself as a trusted authority in your chosen field, and build an audience through entertainment and education.

I remember the day I came across the concept of recording what I was doing on my screen, I can only liken it to how Jack and Jill felt when water became available directly to their kitchen sink, and they no longer had to go up that damn hill.

Screen captures are easy and extremely powerful for a business or entrepreneur. It removes so many problems you will encounter filming yourself, such as…

  • how you look
  • fluffing your lines
  • shooting a perfect video and realising you have left out a major point or a stroke of comic genius :)
  • finding the right backdrop
  • lighting
  • sound (just as you’re finishing your video, someone starts a lawn mower)
  • your eyes glancing to see your notes

I’m a visual learner and I believe if your video is teaching a lesson, it’s gonna be waaaay more effective if people can watch what you’re doing rather than listening to you explain. When I’m personally trying to figure out a new skill, YouTube is my first call, as I can pause the video as I implement the steps being shown.

Before we move on to how to create killer screen capture videos and what tools I like to use, it is extremely important to remember that when creating videos, the #1 rule is to educate or entertain. Think outside the box in terms of creativity, and how to deliver your content so as to put a smile on the face of your viewer.

Once you have your video idea, conduct some research and see what’s already out there. Do a YouTube and a Google search. See what you like and what you dislike. it may also spark even more creative genius 😉

My personal favourites for recording is Camtasia (30 day free trial) and Jing Project. There are many others and a quick google search of ‘screen recording software’ would reveal their identity.

Camtasia lets you record the whole screen or a part of the screen. You also have the ability to edit your video, add music and merge various different clips into one video. Once you are happy with your final draft, produce the video and save it to a folder in your computer then upload from YouTube.

Jing only lets you record video up to 5 minutes long. (I believe you should, where possible, keep your videos under 5 minutes, ideally 3. I use Jing for all my video recording unless it requires more than 5 minutes). Again, you have the option to save to a folder in your computer and then upload from YouTube, or you can hit the YouTube button and it uploads directly from Jing. You will probably then want to edit the information on your video, i.e. the title, description and tags within YouTube.

There are 2 types of content you would use the screen recording format for:

  • demonstration, or a how to
  • deliver a message

If you were going to record a demonstration of how to add a picture to your website… this would entail you recording the screen while doing the actual task. Because you’re actually doing it live, and you presumably know what you’re doing, chances of fluffing your lines are greatly reduced. I would however have a few run throughs off camera and maybe have some notes in bullet point form by your computer just to make sure.

If I were delivering a message, say for example, “why most people make zero bucks online,” then I would weave my message through a story. First I would create my story on a powerpoint slideshow and record myself reading through the presentation. Again, this should eliminate fluffing of lines and forgetting of major points. Have a few run throughs with this format also to get in flow.

  • come up with your video idea
  • conduct a little research on YouTube and Google
  • creative ideas to enhance your delivery of the content, i.e. a little humour, visuals, drawing parallels to help your viewers grasp the idea
  • prepare and practice shooting
  • shoot, edit, if necessary, and upload
  • share

pleasing to the eye, music to the ear and stimulating to the mind :)

Learning TRAFFIC for life

if you’re like me and like to learn by dissection, you’ll love this idea for understanding high volume traffic campaigns…

forgive my Star-Wars reference, i know it’s a little tacky, but i’m in a good mood today, so please allow it.

Learning by Dissection is when you take apart something, look inside it, and see what makes it “tick”.

…drove my parents nuts when i was a kid…used to open brand new toys hoping to find the mystery that made them function haha.

Complex scientific concepts became simple enough that even a child could understand them…such is the power of dissection.

No theory, class, book, or course could have provided the same level of understanding.

Similarly, i know traffic seems like the most challenging idea for you.

All the books, courses, and masterminds you’ve spent thousands on always fall short in their teaching.

Is traffic really that hard?

No. But you probably have never seen a real-life, living, breathing high volume traffic campaign that works…have you?

Imagine you could see one…wouldn’t it be easier to reproduce your own, or even simply modify it the way you want?

Here’s what i mean…

i used to try to “find the magnet”… if my toy had a motor, i recognised it quickly.

i would pull the small metal tabs from the sides, lift the plastic covering on top, and find at its heart a tight copper-wire coil and two polar opposite magnets on either side that i’d remove and derive more pleasure playing with than the toy itself.the result of taking apart several motors like this, was that by 5 years old, i understood the concept of electro-magnetic fields that drives most motorised toys. by 9, i actually created my own motor following the same principles.

By pulling apart parallel port plugs, i was able to connect my own computer-controlled robot to a PC and program it.

i also enjoyed creating light-bulbs.

Thomas Eddisson’s invention of the bulb was my invention at 7…my bulbs consisted of a small thin-wire coil i made by wrapping wire around a pin, and then connected both wire-ends to a power-supply of some kind. The electric energy was converted into heat and light which made me happy.

i created battery cells from coins and acid, by reading a book and pulling apart some batteries to compare notes.

programming was the same — i took working programs, copied them for MONTHS before i finally starting creating my own programs. even today, i often take source code that works and just modify it to do exactly what i want.

you could do the same and learn TRAFFIC SOOOO EASY…

Why Your Traffic Dribbles…and ours BLOWS (up) haha!

You ever hear of a Leptobyte CarPC?

Yeah…i didn’t think so.

it was one of my earlier failed business ideas. I worked hard on it for years…thought, if i could create a small enough PC that fit into the dashboard like a stereo, i would make gazillions.

wasn’t such a bad idea really.

i wanted to create a prototype of these tiny full-fledged windows-operated computers with touch screens and get them into rental cars as a premium entertainment service they could offer their customers.

Car renters would then have access to 100GB of music, video, internet, email, chat, voice communication with other cars, GPS, and could even download their camera photos to the built in hard drive.

My idea was that i’d install them at cost to the whole fleet … just so i could hook them up to gps-targeted advertising systems for things tourists might be interested in…

eg, restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions.

advertisers could then have their ads appear on the entertainment and navigation system in real-time, targeting exact geographic locations as drivers passed through the ad range.

i even had a full-time PhD student at my disposal who built the software as part of his project.

but it never took off.

apart from my 50,000 dollar prototype being stolen along with the car i wanted to demonstrate it in, i just wasn’t thinking big enough.

the mistake i made is the same one you’ve probably been making in your traffic and advertising efforts.

i know a lot of “gooroos” tell you to find a niche and advertise in it.

you’ve done that, havent you?

what were your results?

has it been easy for you to get traffic?

You’ve tried all kinds of advertising methods, spent lots of money on them, and even bought almost every training course on traffic and only got dribbles of traffic.

the trouble…?

You started out with a product or campaign that appeals to a very LIMITED AUDIENCE.

the pool of people you can advertise to in the first place is so specifically small that getting traffic in volume for any price is tough.

that was my error.

These are generic products with MULTIPLE applications. Everyone is a target customer.

Now you can take your iPad and put it on your car’s dashboard, and play mp3’s, movies, check email, chat, download photos, or anything else a Leptobyte CarPC could have done.

You can remove your iPad from the car, and take it outside. Use it in any number of ways in your home, in a cafe, in the office, at a meeting..anything really.

To Capitalise or Not to Capitalise

In selling, one word is almost always insignificant. Here’s the real sales motivation for why i never capitalise it…

From time to time, i’m asked why i don’t capitalise my i’s in Emails.

Reader, you must forgive me for saying this…but an idea that has been beaten to hell and back is that of “Personal Branding”. In my opinion, it is a STUPID concept.

At least most people’s understanding of it is.

Plastering their face all over everything. Talking about themselves. How cool they are. How much money they make. Who their friends are. What their oh so amazing life-style is like.

Giving personality to your business is not achieved by publicly stroking your own ego.


To be honest, all that stuff makes you sound like a super-dick.

Rubbing your “success” in a potential customer’s face is not going to make them like you, trust you, or buy from you.

No body cares how much money you make – clearly you do it by taking their money.

You are NOT the most important person in the world.


THEY ARE. The customer is.

And that is why, i don’t capitalise the word “i”. Because i am insignificant. My reader is THE MOST important person in the world.

Reader, at this website, YOU are the most important person to me. You get a capital letter, i don’t.

Fastest Way To Get PAAAAaaaaiiiiiddddd!

When i was in Geneva, I learned the value of actually being an authority, vs faking being one. In business–customers want to buy from the best and you can’t be the best if you’re a fraud. So how do you choose a business so you’re already the authority?

few years back, i was in Geneva for my first ever academic conference.

was there to present my Artificial Intelligence research to a bunch of scholars many years my seniors.

it was my dad’s proudest moment.

i was 22 years old–with a discovery most of the guys in the room had dedicated their life’s research to finding. i solved it in about 8 months.

anyway, thing i remember about that day, was my feeling of FEAR.

i had been ill the entire week and missed most of the conference. in the hotel room, i sat with my dad debugging the code i’d written….while he helped with my presentation.

finally standing in front of that room facing my “colleagues”, it sank in just how RIVETINGLY SCARY the whole thing was.

What if they asked something i didn’t know the answer to?

the first sound to come out of my mouth was this HOARSE WHIMPER!

Immediately, i told myself, whatever you do, DON’T clear your throat, don’t pause, just talk. you know this, keep going.

and i did.

Everything that followed was golden. the Professors and world reknowned scholars became totally engaged with my message and were very impressed.


because i knew my stuff.

most of the people who come asking for my help with their business really FRUSTRATE me. admittedly, i get frustrated with incompetence pretty quick.

but i mean, why the heck would you choose a business where you need to TEACH marketing and sales to others–when you have never made a cent online?

what’s the fastest way to make money?

different for everyone….but for me, i’d sell a traffic service. or become a programmer for hire.


because i don’t have to learn any new skills. i’ve been paid to progarm since i was 9 and i’ve been advertising online since i was 16.

in a bind, these are the fastest ways for ME to get paid. Not necessarily the fastest for you.

it SAVES TIME to base your product or service on skills you already have. (we’re showing your friends how to do that in the IBA right now. )

it also makes you actually sound like you know what you’re talking about BECAUSE YOU DO. it makes you TRUSTWORTHY. no need to pretend to be an authority with stupid photos and lame ebooks.

if you insist on having a business in a field you’re totally incompetent in….like marketing…like affiliate promotion…like traffic generation…

then factor in learning time for god’s sake!

– it  could take years of application before you’re ready to make money so stop bitching and whining about not having results.

if you’re REALLY smart, then you’d avoid that nonsense all together. Sell a product or service that uses unique skills, experiences, and expertise you’ve gained over your lifetime –

Aside from that, there is no other way to have a “quick” business.

3. Powering the Dream : Part 3 – “Cool Business” Series

Let’s start from scratch.

For you, let’s imagine a business idea that fully replaces the Home Business system gimmicks you’re used to and that excites you and your customers.

We worked on a CENTRAL THEME last time; the grand vision for your business and what you stand for—your uncompromisable values. If you found that lesson a little difficult to action, then it’s likely because a Vision is abstract.

It requires a business idea to bring it to life.

Today’s lesson will help you find your business idea. Not just any business idea though; one that is seeping with passion and is inspired by your values, motivations, and abilities. Audiences will desire contact with your product or service because it stirs their most primitive emotions.

Let’s begin with a case study.


A Computer In Every Home

For 14 years, Bill Gates of Microsoft fame was ranked the richest man in the world.

As he was often quoted saying, his dream for Microsoft was:

A Computer in Every Home”.

Gates’ vision came from a central belief he holds of EQUAL OPPORTUNITY in learning, regardless of socio-economic class. It is a dream we can all share! Although the theme itself is hard to pinpoint in the statement, we can see the same belief carried to another one of Gates’ organisations… the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The vision statement there says:

“We are dedicated to bringing innovations in [learning] to the global community.”

Notice that “computer” has been exchanged with “learning“. And that “every home” has been exchanged with “global community“. The vision is basically the same, but the way the goal is achieved is different.

In Microsoft, Gates achieves the vision by selling software.

In the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he does it through charity to schools and investment in research.

The business idea is the vehicle which allows the vision of the founder to be realised.

Similarly, in dramatic works of literature or film, we find that the theme of a story is also abstract and not unique at all. The PLOT, on the other hand, tells us a series of unique actions and events in such a way that the central theme is demonstrated to the audience.

For example, suppose your vision is:

“Delight children and encourage their imagination.”

Not so profound is it?

One might choose to achieve that vision in any way they like. For instance, my friend Shereen, who is very artistic, creates and sells beautiful decorations for children’s playrooms and bedrooms. On the other hand, another entrepreneurial mother who has some experience with computer programming might create and sell educational online games for children. A single-dad might maintain a paid forum where he and other fathers exchange ideas on how to raise creative kids. And so on.

These are all good business ideas, aren’t they?

Surely they are more interesting than generating traffic for someone else to sell their crappy products to– and watching while others profit from your hard work.

So where do people get their cool business ideas from?

Let’s take a look…


Before the PC there was the Teletype…

It was the late 60’s and computers were expensive and uncommon. When you wanted to use one you had to RENT a block of computer time on a mainframe (say, from General Electric). And since the real computer was somewhere else, you would need to use some sort of type-writer-printer gizmo to talk to it.

Not only that, but you needed to program it yourself.

Translation: Computers were neither accessible nor useful to regular people.

When Bill Gates was in the 8th grade his mother bought a Teletype terminal and rented a block of computer time for the school. Bill Gates became very interested in programming computers as a result.

Bill was in a pickle.

Gates wanted to spend all his time programming the computer but couldn’t afford it. Along with some naughty and ambitious friends he started exploiting loopholes in the system to steal computer time. He was eventually caught. So Gates made a deal with the computer company to find holes in their system in exchange for computer use.

As he made more of a name for himself, IBM asked Gates to create an operating system for their new personal computers. He agreed and charged them a one-time fee of 80,000 dollars!

But instead of selling the copyrights to IBM, he held onto them.

Gates predicted that other manufacturers would imitate IBM’s personal computers for cheaper and they will need operating systems too.

That’s exactly what happened. And Microsoft’s growth exploded. Today each home has MULTIPLE computers.


Most people try to come up with their business idea before they have a theme. However, in the story I shared with you about Microsoft, you can see that the theme is what gives rise to POWERFUL business.

Also, most people try to build a business in an area where they are limited in resources, knowledge, and skill. So they have a lot to learn before they can start earning. The following exercise will help you take stock of your existing resources and eliminate learning time in rendering your product.


Each of the topics below is a fundamental resource needed by an entrepreneur to successfully build a business.

Use 5 sheets of paper and write one topic at the top of each page. Time yourself for 20-30 minutes, non-stop. Don’t take breaks and fill the pages with as many answers as you can come up with.  Keep adding to your answers until the time is up.


  1. KNOWLEDGE: Write down any qualifications, certificates, degrees, “how to” books, or courses you have ever studied or completed.
  2. CREATIVE OUTLETS: Write down all your creative outlets or hobbies that you enjoy or have enjoyed in the past.
  3. SKILLS: Write any skills you possess that others admire or envy.
  4. WORK: Write all the jobs you have ever had.
  5. PASSION: Write every topic that fascinates you or has fascinated you in the past.


When you finish the exercise, study your answers. From each page, circle 1-2 items that you believe will be most helpful in achieving the vision you wrote in our previous lesson.

By the time you are done with the exercise, you should have a hot business idea you can build online. Put your idea somewhere safe and start investigating it. You’ll refer back to it in following lessons of this series.

Creating this business is going to be easy. You’ll profit from it quicker and you’ll have more fun working on it than any affiliate or marketing system you’ve ever tried. I promise!

“APPRENTICE” OPENING: Internet Marketing ~~~ ((( thot u might be interested!!! )))


Ya know how everyone says they made all these crazy amounts of money?

to the point you don’t believe it any more?

you’d think most of the guys are liars who claim to make “$21 million dollars in 8 minutes!”, right?

but who knows, maybe that one guy is out there and is actually telling the truth…and they really are gonna show you how to make $20 mil or whatever lol.

you’d have no way to know.

besides, most of the how-to’s you get are inaccurately named.

Titles like,
“How to Make 100,000 in 30 days Using Blogs”…

do not imply that they’ll give you a day-by-day account of what you should be doing on each of those days. They never conclude with the words: “Day 30 – look at your bank account you should see at least 100,000+ now!”

no one EVER tells you that. they keep it vague.

because most of the time, it IS vague in their mind. purely theoretical. Never been done, at least not by them.

it’s cute selling “how to make money” stuff without teaching anyone anything. the instructions sound complete, but they are not designed to make anyone rich..other than the author.

and i guess, that’s why it’s so easy for these gurus to keep taking people’s money.


we’re just going around in circles here, kidding each other. teaching very narrow areas of focus–introductory, elementary stuff…and it’s all the stuff that DOES NOT build a business.

yeah, leads and sales and copy are cool. but businesses have been successful since forever, without any of the technology we have available now to pull off those things!

Been Trying To Get it Right For Years

and i didn’t just guess at that conclusion. i’ve been trying for a few years to increase the success-rate i had with my students. like, when i noticed the leveraged training products (courses, books, video training) weren’t working…i tried coaching.

came up with a pretty good plan to get people to a point where they had websites, email autoresponders, marketing, copywriting, sales pages, and so on. i mean, we really cared about those “kids”.

Don’t laugh.

that’s what we like to think of our students sometimes. we spent months designing curriculums, testing, adjusting…trying again and again.

Tried Masterminds

we worked with a bunch of price points ranging from $2,000 to $20,000 for group “masterminds”. We brought lots of experts. and even tried different group sizes. from 1-on-1 intimate to 4-on-5. and the results were good, they really were.

but still…besides being EXTREMELY exhausting the masterminds left students feeling a little sense of incompletion. they’d call us. they’d send us emails. i even continued to help, on my own time.

A year later, i’m still supporting those same people.

All this while trying to keep up with other work and responsibilities.

it was frustrating, i’m sure, for both sides.

so we tried again.

this time, we said let’s add a monthly support line. and see if that helps…did it though?

we still had many of the same problems. students showed up for support the first month. a handful turned up the second. and then support line went dead.

The “Need MORE Than Support”-Line

still, the emails and phone calls kept coming in.

people seem to want more personalised help.

Dabbled in Done-For-You Services

i went on to dabble in services.

i thought this would be a far better idea. given i’d actually DO stuff for people, i’d at least guarantee they got off to a good start. i knew i could give simple enough instructions for them to follow.

And i figured, for now, i’d support them personally until it got too much (which it quickly did).

it was one of the best ideas i ever had, though.


i hadn’t initially planned to spend TWO hours consulting for such a low price. but that’s how long the clients and students seemed to NEED before they could understand the big picture.

That’s what they seemed to need to gain confidence in their ideas. and essentially, they all wanted the same thing.

Just someone to look at what they’re doing and say, “yeah, you’re on the right track”. nothing more.

Who am I to put a time-limit on that?

instead of that frightening me off, crazy as i can be sometimes, i decided to expand the service. it’s going to be even more comprehensive and ongoingly supportive. but for that, i’m going to need ingenuity.

Torn. Can’t Scale Out!

needless to say, the service got popular very quickly.

pretty soon, i found myself torn. because scaling it out would take a lot of personal time from me…and i’m already back-logged about 4 months. i have so many things going on, that i’m way too slow to help enough people.

The Solution?

i asked a few friends and got some advice. most said, raise the price.

some suggested i eliminate the service.

and other suggested i outsource it.

I Don’t Like Any of Their Advice!

well unfortunately, none of those answers were what i was looking for. the services are priced affordably for the intended audience. i do not want to raise the price. i especially think it UN-fair to increase price without adding value.

and quite frankly, it would be DUMB of a business to eliminate its most popular service.

This is!

Students Teach Teacher

yes it takes up personal time, but it gives me great insight into my clients and how they learn things. they clearly need the personal guidance–and the repetition has educated ME and made me an expert at creative frames.

creativity gives direction…but it’s an acquired skill that takes time to learn.

The #1 Reason Home Businesses Fail (In Jim’s Books)

i’ve already identified many of the biggest challenges stopping people from making money, and it had nothing to do with how long they were in the industry or how many books they read or even how smart they were.

there are a number of reasons for the failure rate, but “lack of creativity” is the biggest one.

marketing is hard when you haven’t seen enough new ideas that work. especially when just about every guru out there sabotages your learning by telling you that their stuff works and makes so much money…when in reality, it doesn’t.

their agenda is to have something sellable to sell. if they told you that they spent a million dollars to make 100,000 in 30 days then it’s not exactly going to fetch much of a price. so they tell you “i made 100,000 in 30 days using this method”. and they leave the little detail of it costing a million to pull it off.

come on people. think!

Reason #2: Lots of Misinformation. Most Advice is Outright Lies.

oh yeah, i’m in the inner circle, so to speak. i can tell you tales of fabrication which will make you doubt everything you ever believed.

so yes, a lot of people are duplicating stuff that plain outright doesn’t work…and has NEVER really worked for anyone. no matter how “sexy” they make the method sound.

the people who “make it” usually have at some point figured out a way to see through people’s bullshit and fill their heads with good examples they derive inspiration from. that’s how creative people work.

otherwise, without creativity, the only thing they can do is swindle other people of their money by telling them lies.

Creativity Can Be Learned

i’ve found that creativity, is missing for most of us when we start anything.

but as soon as a student grasps it, they find their voice and immediately see a clear path to the identity, the vision, and the future of their business. That’s the jewel.

More valuable than money.
More desirable than survival.

once they see the cleared path ahead, the once frustrated, burned out student….now “runs with the ball”. A renewed sense of passion for what they’re doing as a REAL business!

a real business, that just HAPPENS to run on the internet.

when it’s THEIR idea, it stops being about a network marketing scheme or an affiliate gig.

it becomes about them turning their ideas into reality and seeing their impact on the lives of others.

“Me Too! Me Too!” *dorks*

in fact, as i looked around, i realised in a sea of “me too” marketers, i was cranking out business ideas DAILY for my clients. ideas, that i, quite honestly would sometimes love to work on.

why not?

but for all my hard work, many of the people who consult with me, after painful, tiring man-hours between me and my staff working on their businesses, trying to help them succeed…

…they do not even turn the switch on!

they fail to start!!!

and, you know, there’s a culture amongst us in the “online marketing” world, that this should be accepted as NORMAL. that it’s cool that we sell stuff to people who’ll never do anything with it, because it’s not our problem.

or is it?

Maybe It is Our Problem After All?

we hear all the big shots talking shit about how we should accept it; that people will buy courses and do nothing with them. that people will lose interest.

We’ve even been taught to call them names and look down on them as less worthy.

i don’t know about you, doesn’t a little voice inside, tell you there’s something wrong with that?

a voice inside me has been telling me this for about three years. it’s haunted me.

on the contrary, when gurus talk of the “80/20 rule” and how you should focus on the 20% of you customers who bring the “results”…

i can’t help but notice the other slice of the pie is much bigger!

MUCH, MUCH bigger.

not that they’re wrong about the 80/20 rule…

but it’s their complacency that bothers me. you’re telling me, i’m supposed to go in, take money from everyone i sell to…but knowing do it, with the absolute belief that my product is ONLY going to give value to 20% of the people i take money from?

What about the other 80% i rip off?

i’m supposed to disappoint 80% of my customers. promise, but not deliver. take money, and give nothing in return?

What Does That Make Me?

what does that make ANYONE in business?

i’m sorry, i fought it hard and long. and i’m not going to any more.

i want to raise the bar. Even if it is by 1%. because that’s what a business leader does. that’s what the Googles and the Facebooks of the world do.

they raise the bar.

i’m sure if you’ve been around the industry for a while, you’ve seen the same old boring launches before. Then after a long period of silence, you probably noticed that my recently released “PPC Supremacy” with business partner David Schwind was not “just another launch”.

was it?

It Raised The Bar!

for everyone who followed.

and this is why i wrote this long tiresome post.

i think i found an answer that will make a small handful of people very happy. while it will at the same time be completely dismissed as “just another gimmick” by everyone else.

and that’s ok. it’s all part of my plan.

i’m not going to send out email about this. because my intention is for most people to never make it this far.

This Post is Special…

it’s an experiment i’ve been DYING to try. it’s pretty out there. so i’m not looking for losers who’re gonna get mad if it doesn’t work out.

not that i think of people like that

…winners and losers, i mean….

but i just REALLY don’t want to attract the wrong kind of person to this thing. it will cost me a lot more time and money to deal with certain people than i’m prepared to give.

this is a project about EFFICIENCY.

here’s what i’m thinking…

for the longest time, i’ve watched this industry from near and from afar.

i’ve seen some good things and some bad. a lot of disgusting, horrifying things, to be honest. and what is clear to me is that aside from the 99% of the market that’s just RUBBISH OF SOCIETY…there are people out there who are prepared to do whatever it takes to make it. and they get it.

they understand that i don’t have ten minutes to chit-chat on the phone. not because i’m a dick, but because i am usually trying to put out about 13 fires at the same time. barely got 2 hours of sleep the whole week, and the idea of food hasnt had time to cross my mind in about 3 days.

they get that.

so they don’t email me with dipshit inquiries and then get mad when i don’t reply. i barely have time to reply to stuff that IS IMPORTANT.

No. instead, they sneak into my life.

they do it so artfully and carefully…i’ve watched, completely aware but enjoying it tremendously.

though i’ve made myself relatively accessible to the public…it’s these people who still have respect for my time, despite my friendliness that i appreciate most.

you never see an agenda in them other than their willingness to take whatever i feel like giving them. but otherwise willing to serve, just to learn.

doesn’t matter if what they get doesn’t take a minute from me…whether it’s advice, a referral, or whatever…it has IMMENSE value to them.

so they’re extremely eager to serve. they understand while it would be offensive to offer me money for my advice, they see value in just being around. being handy.

you might think me an old fashioned fellow for saying this… and that sucks, because you might be right. i could be old fashioned…

Magic & Fantasy; History & Reality.

but i remember when i was growing up, i’d read a lot of books about magic and fantasy. and always a mother or father would pack their young boy up and send him off with strangers who would take him to be a servant to a knight, or a wizard, or a scholar in the hope that the kid would one day grow up and do something great.

Become SOMEONE great!

we’ve all seen the movies and read the books. Legends of heroism, bravery like Merlin, Arthur, The Dark Knight, the Karate Kid and so on.

Gambling their Flesh and Blood? I Guess, I Can See That…

i always wondered how a person could just leave their child, knowing they will never see them again…gamble their flesh and blood on “apprenticeship”. but scary as it seems, in a twisted way it makes sense.

that was the way out of “the rat race” in their day!

when you’re poor and trodden on, you want your kid to have a chance at doing something huge with their lives. You want them empowered so no one would step on them again.

this stuff doesn’t just happen in fantasy, though.

Good for the Economy

certain governments (eg Australia) recognise apprenticeship as one of the fastest ways to improve their economy. They aim to empower their youth with trade-learning programs before they drop out of school or end up in non-academic pursuits.

they help small businesses by subsiding the cost of paying apprentices, contributing to the formal education, and they give many other incentives for tradesmen to hire trainees and empower them.

in turn, the tradesmen often give partnership opportunities as trust is built between them and their apprentices. as they prove themselves worthy…because they’ve been hand-trained. it’s almost like passing on “the family business” to your kids.

Except the tradesman gets to choose his apprentice!

Worked in History Too

in history too, many very valuable trades were taught that way.

Before universities and educational institutions, a scholar would take on a student who would be unobtrusive and helpful who’d learn from observing. and as they got better and better, they would start doing their own projects and have the wisdom and guidance of their mentor right to help them.

i like that idea. i’ve always liked it.

It’s Going on Around Us Right Now!

in fact, in a big way, “apprenticeship” is how people are being turned into “rockstars” over night in the industry, right now. Yes, right now!

often, all it takes is to be in the presence of the right person, when they’re in a social mood.

i’ve seen total beginners who came out of NOWHERE. they managed to get into the good books of guru X and suddenly the rest of the gurus knew their name. heck, i did it.

most of us did it!

all it takes is to get invited along to something…and you’re in.

Something Disturbing About the Students

but i’ve noticed something disturbing about the people who spend time with us.

wealthy and successful people socialise differently from everyone else. for them, socialising and bonding with other wealthy men and women is a business strategy. Dinner bills are not paid by whoever gets stuck with the bill…

one guy offers to pick up the tab so he can get in the good graces of the others.

another guy does it because he wants to show that he is the wealthiest at the table.

another feels obligated because the people seated at the table are people she considers her students.

a student picks up the tab to impress his teacher.

what it ends up being is that either the tag-along apprentice starts to feel like a bit of dead-weight bludger if they never pick up tab. Or they find themselves spending money they can’t afford to spend so they can attend every event, every social activity, and sometimes they find themselves having to do activities they don’t morally (and sometimes religiously) agree with!

The “Help” is Hardly Worth Anything

to make matters worse, suppose the student were to ask a personal question or to ask for advice about their own business…or a favour even.

it’s almost always seen as a disturbance by the rest of the group…who are really out to have a good time. they don’t care about the student’s agenda to get ahead!

and yet people do it. i did it. i remember flying out to events i had no “what’s in it for me?” other than that i MIGHT meet someone important. that there MIGHT be an opportunity or a project in it for me.

i’m sure you’ve done something like that too. and it’s cool

but it sure wastes a lot of time. doesn’t it?

and money.

if you ask me, i rather hang out with my “role models” while they’re WORKING instead of while partying. i’d have learned a lot more and would have willingly done anything for my mentors…if they’d just let me observe their process.

i know that it would be backwards to think we can resurrect “apprenticeship” in exactly the same way online, but i’ve been thinkign a lot about it.

here’s the thing…

if i really wanted to show someone how to make money, i would have to do it WITH them. and we tried the “coaching” thing…

we did ONE day and it was too short.

we did THREE days and it was too LONG.

we did the hand-holding.

we did the coaching.

we did the done-for-you stuff.

and in all cases, i just feel we fell short and left the student wanting. the value was definitely there, but the student, not his words, but with actions showed it. they continued making contact. They continued asking for more help…

help we honestly could not afford to give.

but i knew, they asked because they NEEDED more…

we could not give them more, because what they wanted would require us to leave our businesses unattended. A successful business person does NOT take his focus away from his own stuff. A successful business person does NOT invest attention in a project they have no long-term interest in.

in fact, many times, these coaching things were “end of the line” for us.

as soon as someone had my phone number, they no longer felt a need to buy anything from me. why should they, if i’m giving it for free?

and i know it sounds bad, but it really isn’t. it actually challenged me to ask myself…

“What would they have to do, to make it worth your while. Can you REALLY REALLY help them?”

that might seem like an obvious question to ask.

but it’s not easy to put a dollar price on something as huge a commitment as this. because you’re asking a very busy person to take their focus off their passion and vision to deal with someone else’s project.

it’s not a matter of money. you get me?

You really couldn’t offer me enough money to take a break from my vision.

when your vision powers you instead of your greed, it really makes a difference in your actions.

so i pondered this idea for months and months.

and as i expanded my business and acquired new staff, i noticed something else.

each person who joined my staff and began working for me was an expert in their own right. Successful copywriters, television commercial editors, researchers with doctorate degrees, magazine editors, scientists, highly skilled programmers, assistants, and so on….as i hired out each skill…

in the beginning, they acted like it was just another job, and i was just another contract.

Video Marketing Training

but as time passed, little by little, one video editor began to learn marketing just from editing my training videos. another was being trained how to create videos that sell…by ME.

i am not a video editor.

PPC Advertising Mastery

one technician was trained on my keyword research process so he could help me build client accounts. pretty soon he asks if he could use the software and tools and training he got from me to do his own CPA advertising.

Sure, why not?


copywriters–one starts to learn a whole new process to copywriting that makes his imagination run wild. the other asks me to teach him PPC to market his ad writing services.

I was better than my staff; At Their Own Jobs!

i realised pretty soon that i was having to train my staff…because home business and marketing on the internet is a totally new profession. no one has really started to teach it.

there’s not a lot of formal education on it, there are no degrees you can hire that bring people with good business sense and practical, real world results.

the skills, at the level i need them, are simply not out there.

and i’m training my staff and paying them at the same time. but when they leave me, they take the new skill to the next job. So my investment in employees is toward very short-term assets.

then it hit me!

i decided to execute a plan i’d been thinking about all along. i’m going to execute it. and really help HELP people to learn ONLINE BUSINESS BUILDING principles. from A to Z.

my way, though.

because many of the online marketing entrepreneurs i meet (especially the ones who sneak into my life) actually have plenty of marketing skill.

what they’re missing is fundamental BUSINESS stuff that no one teaches or even emphasizes. Everyone is too concerned with the instant gratification of getting leads or something else they’ve been programmed to need.

They totally miss the big picture skills of creativity, discipline, morality, and accountability.

i find the biggest problem to be lack of creativity. i spoke about that already. but then there’s more..

Lame and Boring

their businesses are, i’m sorry to say this, lame and boring. even they’re not excited about them! dude. i will give them ideas.

they have a bad work ethic…totally inappropriate for business. who’s gonna teach that to them? me. i work so hard my days run into each other. no one has EVER got to the top sitting on their hands.

they have no business ethic. no one is teaching them what is right and wrong, what is ACTUALLY moral and what just happens to work. who’s going to save them when a law suit smacks them in the eye for intellectual property infringement?

they do not have business systems. they are PART of systems, but they do not have their OWN systems they follow. i believe people can be automated like machines and streamlined. that’s how i train my staff…so they only use their most useful skill while leaving the rest of the process to other parts of the machine.

they have no sense of responsibility. i find the biggest challenge is that new business owners do not understand responsibility. they do things that are comfortable and it appears to have no impact on their bottom line. but they lose MILLIONS in damaged reputation. and to be honest, even some of the people who have made a lot of money in the industry are losing sales every day because they did not honour a promise or two. if you ask them, the excuse is ready.

still wondering why all the “how to” courses fail to how-to?

i thought so. i want to change that.

here’s how it works:

I’m looking for a special person to be my apprentice. someone who will work alongside me, mastering skills by working on live projects.

i will help them with their projects and they will help me with mine.

whatever they lack from their most sellable skill, i will train them on it so they are a long-term asset. to me and to themselves.

  2. They can have my time, if they are willing to trade me theirs
  3. They can access my entire staff of copywriters, researchers, writers, programmers, etc if they will agree to master a skill i can in turn benefit from.
  4. They can get me to work with them on their projects, if they will work with me on mine
  5. They will be consistent and competent because i don’t tolerate anything less. i work on a 3-strike system. 3 strikes and you’re dropped from the program. mistakes cost a LOT more than money in business. mistakes cost CUSTOMER TRUST. sales cannot happen in an environment that is unsafe, chaotic, inconsistent, or unpredictable.
  6. They will be unobtrusive and helpful and take whatever learning they get on the job
  7. They will not whine or complain and they will follow my instructions IMMEDIATELY for their business – no excuses.
  8. They will be accessible to me and to THEIR CUSTOMERS 24/7 around the clock, because they understand that online, it’s always daytime SOMEWHERE in the world.
  9. They will understand that we are on newspaper deadlines and will not let their personal shit get in the way of being reliable.
  10. They will be a long-term asset to me and will understand that if they want my TRUE involvement in their business, it will be on my time and on my terms. and they will have to answer to me if they slip.

Best Things In Life Are Free?

i laugh at the idea of “free” traffic. because there is no such thing.

See, i’ve done the “free” thing and i know. What do you think is free?

Article marketing.

I beg you go look at my Betternetworker profile and try to find a pattern between the articles that did well and the ones that didn’t. I’ve written over 1000 articles since i got into online marketing. And i found that when you want to make money, you’re going to have to spend a little too.

Don’t worry, i plan to explain this to you.

Have you noticed that some of my recent posts have included images at the very start of the post?

It would seem like just a way to make the post look pretty. But really, it’s a second chance to get someone to read the rest of the post.

When precisely placed, the image will catch the eye first. And the text before and after it will make them curious to read more.

Not only that. When you share your post, in Facebook, you can choose that image as a way to catch people’s eyes on your Facebook wall!

Perhaps those two things were obvious to you, now that i point them out.

But now you’re saying, so what, I can get free pictures to put on my posts. done. right?

Not really. You see, i have experimented with different pictures and photos on my articles. But there’s a certain type of image that can make or break the article.

Unless you are an artist or a photographer, you should use a service like istockphoto.com to get pictures to use in your posts. Do not copy other people’s stuff because it is illegal and will get you sent to jail. You can buy “royalties” to the pictures and photos others make at the iStockphoto website.

The price for a license can range from 1 credit (about $1.50 i believe) to as much as $45.

Usually photographs cost the least. Drawings tend to cost more because they are editable and very high resolution.

So guess which images people respond best to in an article post?

You guessed it. The high resolution drawings.

For the life of me, i don’t know why but this is how it is. And every time i have spent the $40 to have a high res drawing placed inside the body of my article…the article received a lot of views, comments, and interactions.

Free traffic makes a great marketing pitch. But the reality is, that’s all it is.

Un-Slap-able Google Ads

This is part 1 of my “Un-Slap-able” series for PPC showing you a different idea for writing Google Adwords ads.

Ads written like this are hard to slap. Here’s a tip we’ve been using over here to find “relevance” easily and get high quality scores fast!

By checking the organic results, i use this system for figuring out what the most successful theme is going to be for any ad i write. Watch how this method actually yields different relevance themes for Google and Yahoo! Might this explain why some people do well on Google but not on Yahoo or vice versa? 😉

Maybe I’ll start posting my to-do list here and then I can be accountable to the whole internet.


To do today (in order of importance):

  1. Create an updated split-test spreadsheet for Mike and check if we have enough data with 500 clicks to make a conclusive decision in favour of one headline over another.
  2. Record my screen with Camtasia and demonstrate how i revise an entire PPC campaign that has been underperforming lately.
  3. Finish one of the three blog post ideas i started but saved as drafts and never finished.
  4. Transfer this blog to another hosting and test if it’s faster than this crappy godaddy hosting. Right now it gives DNS error for almost every time i try to load the page and it takes me half an hour just to get into my admin panel grrrrr. testing hostgator and hostdepartment. Hostdepartment used to suck because it was unreliable but i think they’ve overhauled it and it seems to be the fastest so far. Hostgator takes ages just to get into their webhosting cpanel so i’m not holding my breath for them. Let’s see how we go! Btw, if you get an error when you try to load my blog later can you report it for me here please? Thanks.
