“PLEASE REMOVE ME FROM YOUR LIST! I have no interest in your offer.”
Yeah. You’re feelin’Â fired up!
I know this. Because, if you’ve ever sent out a broadcast to your mailing list, you got that exact same one-line email from some douche.
Makes you feel like shit, doesnt it?
I hate it. I want so badly to just write back “EFF YOU”. Luckily, i’ve been blessed with the longest fuse god ever gave man. So by the tips of my fingers, i manage to hold myself, unsubscribe them manually through gritted teeth and some choice verbal swears, and then i delete that message with passionate disgust so I NEVER have to see it again.
That … is ….
NOT a nice way to feel!
If you get mad, i understand. That email of such few words adds insult to injury.
On the one hand, one of the leads you spent time and money generating, you just found out they didn’t like you. And you’re one more lead down.
Feels frustrating. Especially in the beginning. Because it seems so much easier to lose prospects than it is to get them.
But it’s just OUTRIGHT INSULTING, when some bitter person gets mad and decides to take the time to write an email, choose you as their victim, and intentionally spread their “anger” like a disease.
Woah…chill dude.
What’s with the attitude? Take yourself off the list. I don’t have time for this.
If you’re like me, you make no effort to hide the unsubscribe link. It’s directly after every single email. Other people like to bury their unsubscribe link at the very very bottom of their messages
…but not me.
I even chose the phrasing, “to be removed from this list”. I want people to know that this is the link to click if you wanna be removed.
The worst part is, that those rude and angry emails, make it hard for you to send out your next broadcast.
Have you felt that way before? Where you totally second-guess your whole approach, and wonder if you are really emailing too frequently? Or maybe you should send more free stuff?
Anger turns to hesitation. and then Fear.
What to do?
Well, here’s my take on the whole subject…
If you usually read my posts or you’ve bought anything from me in the past, you already know that the reason you subscribe to my emails is…
My Emails Save You TIME
And i appreciate that and love you for it.
You see, I want to teach you how to be a good marketer like me.
To do that, i have to show you what worked for me. i assume you’re here because you want to draw on my experience. Don’t you believe you can avoid wasting time and money by hearing from me, first-hand about what works and what doesn’t.
So if i say, hey John (or Jane), i tried PPC and it worked.
I’ve just saved you from guessing. You don’t have to go try a million different ways to get traffic. Because if there’s one thing i’m absolutely certain of is that PPC works.
Here i am. Living proof.
My responsibility as a trainer and teacher, at least the way i see it, is not to preach and lecture. It’s to set a good example you can follow.
We all learn better from demonstration and imitation.
So i have to actually DO what i teach and PROVE it works really well. I’m supposed to be my teaching’s own perfect example.
A worked example.
Suppose, i tell you,
“create a squeeze page in this way and collect leads from it”.
I am collecting leads the exact same way. Without any fancy expensive software or employees.
i tell you,
“build a relationship with your list”.
What am i doing in every email i send you? I try to give you value and entertainment to build our friendship.
i tell you,
“educate, sell, and track your list”. I am doing that every time i write to you.
So yes, Mr and Mrs Angry Unsubscriber.
You might not be interested in our offers but there are other people who look to us for leadership.
Did I Step On Your Cat?
Ever notice how the Angry Unsubscriber usually seems genuinely offended that you’re selling?
It’s like they wait around, perfectly content to keep receiving your emails as long as they’re useful, entertaining, and free…but as soon as you have something to sell,
… they think they have an open license to be rude!
I think it’s their sense of entitlement and it bugs me.
Most employee-type personalities do that thing…
Douchebags Are All Around Us
Like I popped over to KFC for lunch yesterday and remembered why i hadn’t eaten there in years. But anyway there was this guy and he was holding up the queue asking the manager to “work something out” for his order. Translation: “give me a discount”. He figured by taking this “big” order (in his opinion) he was entitled to save a couple of bucks from the posted price. Which, if we’re talking entitlement, then KFC has the right to get the full posted price.
And you could see it in his face, that he was one of those guys who would go to work and boast to his buddies about how he saved $3 by out-smarting the just-above-minimum-wage “manager” of the branch. Friggin bully.
Those emails are written by douchebags.
They act as if you should apologise…for stepping on their cat…i mean for selling.
Excuse me?
If i don’t sell, i make no money. And no one will CARE about what i do, since there’s no proof it works. What use is a squeeze page designed this way, or a newsletter written that way, or this keyword technique or that ad strategy….if none results in money?
Why would you want to follow my example if i have no evidence that it’s working or will ever work?
You need to be able to trust my example.
So if i expect you to take my word and use PPC for traffic, then i gotta be the one who:
- took the risk FIRST.
- Tested PPC with my own money when i had very little.
- and proved it makes money
All this, before i could start dishing out advice about it.
…and ya know what else?
It’s my DUTY to keep makin’ sales and money. Because it gives you confidence in ME and confidence in yourself to learn…so you can go forth fearlessly.
When i tell you that i get leads and prospects and traffic from PPC, i’m telling you what works. And you’d be a fool to think that this is a “personal opinion” and to dismiss my advice.
THERE IS NO OPINION ABOUT IT!
I am telling you, i am here today, in a position to teach others how to make money on the internet, because i have done it first. And I know for a fact that…
This
Way
WORKS.
Speaking of things that work, you should totally check out my new instant traffic-getting method. Peace.

Right on Jim!
I had a couple of these mails just yesterday and they do fire you up. They seemed to forget that it was they who actually signed into the list in the first place.
Great post and good perspective:)
TOTALLY relate to this post and feel exactly the same when I get those messages too (even worse when you are just starting out!) Like you say, I think we just have to recognise that the people who only ever want something "for free" and unsubscribe the minute you make an offer to them are actually not really the type of people you want on your list anyway – they will just drain you and give nothing in return – they don't understand "value".
People like this who "self-filter" themselves off my list is fine by me (I just need to build my list more quickly to take the sting away!)
Anyway you certainly won't get an "unsubscribe" from me,! …… Nicky

Great Rant Jim, how about the douche bags that send spam about the best internet marketing system ever and at the bottom tell you to reply to their email with unsubscribe in the subject line (you know, those buggers that harvested your email somewhere off the net)…not sure which is more annoying and if there is any connection between the two…
As for an example of learning through experiencing something, I find your emails and blog posts a perfect example of copywriting that 'works'. I'm always entertained by your emails and blog posts, in fact I would say that of all the marketers I subscribe to I enjoy yours the most. It's actually a great learning experience just to see how 'well done' email marketing works.
Cheers,
Steve
I know exactly what you mean, Jim. It's like they think they're too good to click the unsubscribe button.
I am always entertained by your emails, Jim.
@Steve I love those guys too. I often wonder what they are thinking.
Is it they think you will be too lazy to unsubscribe or are they trying to get confirmation that someone has the email address.
Hi Jim
Nice way to stick it to em.
Being in business means making money. If your not making money, your not in business.
The 'douchebags' who UN-subscribe because you are marketing your business are obviously in business to make no money – How dumb is that.
Anyway. I am ready to get into PPC. I did my research on who were the best leaders in the PPC field, your name came up everywhere.
So I have checked out your blog. (I already had PPC Domination a while ago) and I am ready to learn from the master.
I am sure I will pick up some free golden nuggets of info which you have sprinkled throughout your blog but I am also prepared to pay for products which you have created or suggest will help me with PPC.
WHY? – cos your the man.
You can help me make money for my business, so why wouldn't I want to take your advice?
A real businessman
Dwayne
Jim –
I'm a marketer, too. I gotta say you're a little over-sensitive about this.
If the entire email was the 2 sentences you posted – so what! Why get your knickers in a twist? Do you expect to dazzle and win over everyone you reach? People seek refunds and unsubscribe all day, and for many different reasons. Why take it personally? Keep doing what you know is right and all will be well.
I do enjoy your stuff. Keep being real and don't try and please everyone (keeps the acid in the stomach).
Jim, Good post.I hear you loud and clear.
I know this is a slightly different subject but what about the marketers who make it so difficult to get off of their $39.97 a month continuity plan?
(I won't name names here but they are some of biggest big dawgs in the industry who are guilty of this) With totally clueless tech support. Who make it so you actually have to cancel your credit card to get off their plan.
Believe me I am not the only person who has had this problem.
I watched as one of these gurus was cornered by a very upset person with the exact problem I am talking about at a major seminar.
In a very loud voice the person told of this identical problem.
I don't think I have seen quicker use of a cell phone by the guru to get the person off his continuity plan.
Don't mean to get side tracked but, when a person honestly wants to get off such a plan and the marketer just makes promises it has been taken care of. Then your next month's statement arrives and there is the charge but, you have already been shut out of your back office.
When marketers acted like having a continuity plan was some really neat invention, I just looked on it as another form of an MLM autoship. Too bad it's not quite as easy sometimes to get off of it.
Thanks for the great post, I always like your rants, now I just gave you mine.
Denis
Jim, this is BY FAR the BEST Blog Post I have EVER Read on this Subject! And so timely, as I experienced something similar just a few days ago.. Ironically enough. the 'douchebags' are usually people who they themselves offer no value whatsoever. but are 'Lawnchair' Quarterbacks who love to criticize. because it makes them feel better somehow about themselves. Anyway. AWESOME Post and I Appreciate all your Emails and Insight!!!
Jim, I love hearing from you, highly value your opinion, and will always be on your list because you do provide so much value. Even with the F-bomb thrown in.
Your emails have taken on the same quality as Mike Dillard's. When you actually do promote something (rarely, it seems to me) I KNOW it will be good.
On another note, it's REALLY good to hear other stories of "unsubs" and that it bothers you too.
Sometimes I feel like a wimp that I even think twice about it, but I do hesitate with the next email! How dumb is that?!? Especially if people on my list feel the way I do about you and genuinely look forward to your emails.
Mark Hoverson said that if you aren't getting hate mail and unsubscribes, you aren't putting out enough content.
I definitely need to pick up the pace and get more hate mail coming in!
Thank you for sharing this!!!

Hey, Jim—THANX, you are clarifying the present emotional bull. this appears to be a time for the frustrated to use their frustration to motivate themselves to default. be careful. Because, my friend you
are most assuredly on the threshold of greatness. Why? because you are seeding this next generation of super-net-marketers, and
I'm one of them !
Lifully, Peter
@Dwayne, Glad to see you over here, brother! Jim's the man, I'm over here for the nuggets of wisdom, as well…
Seriously, Jim — your emails and blog posts are some of the best…
Certainly this helps you as much as knowing what “quality score” and the like means.
This line right here cracks me up, “Luckily, i’ve been blessed with the longest fuse god ever gave man.”
Funny stuff — have a great day!

Great post Jim. I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes I get a subscriber who replies to my email and says "Stop spamming me!" Even though the email that I sent him had a lot of helpful information about building an online business. I am proud to say that I haven't cursed out anyone yet (Doesn't mean I never will lol) Getting into a war of words will not solve anything I guess. Just let go and move on. That is what we should always do. Solid information Jim.
All the best,

Hi Jim,
I love your writing style and the topic. I have gotten emails like this, more than I care to think about.
Lead by example, that’s powerful!
Thanks,
Alan

Is good that you seem willing to be a mentor and because of the avid response you likely get, you can see how rare the offer is made. These are tough times and people (me) want to feel empowered at seeing efforts to do for themselves generating profits.
Don't presently HAVE $500 for your "let me look over your Adwords account and settings" offer, let alone $2000 for the full service, so I'll have to wait. Am a relative newbie; the site belongs to me in that I bought the domain and hosting, but someone else (who I am an affiliate to) created the page & uploaded everything.
I cannot read a bunch of books and suddenly know how to do something, so "guru-courses", even if I could afford them, would be a total waste. I need to actually watch the process step by step, to see all of the crucial "little hidden steps" that somehow get omitted in videos or written instruction. Like the settings for Adwords. I have no idea what is what. In some cases it seems Google chooses features for you (that you have no idea exist) which ultimately will cost you $$ with no results to speak of.
Absolutely brilliant article wrote something similar on my blog recently. I 100% resonate with this, I call these peeps “window shoppers”
